Academy Alumni in the News
Phil Cannon ’82 is featured on the cover of Timeout Magazine’s 2022 Huntsman World Senior Games Results & Records book! Phil – who was inducted into our Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019 – was a three-sport athlete in basketball and football as well as a standout in track & field during his Academy career. He now competes in the World Senior Games, most recently in 2022 when he won the triple jump and placed top-5 in the long jump and 50-meter dash in the age 55-59 bracket. “With well over 10,000 participants from around the world,” stated Phil about his appearance on the magazine’s cover, “it’s an honor to represent active seniors while we’re still young!” For more alumni press clips, click on the following links.

Bay Area Provides Warm Welcome for Alumni Receptions
A pair of Columbus Academy alumni receptions took place earlier this month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first was graciously hosted by Todd Park ’90 and Amy Geng at the Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club for a night of fun, food and Academy fellowship at the picturesque site. The following evening, Lindsey Kirk ’01 and Jeremy Summer ’01 hosted alumni at their home for yet another enjoyable get together. At both events (view photos) – which were also attended by Head of School Melissa Soderberg, Assistant Head of School for Development/External Relations Erich Hunker ’81, Director of Alumni Relations Michael Haddock, Director of Admissions & Tuition Assistance John Wuorinen ’80 and Director of Student Outreach Pedro Mena – alumni heard updates on how our staff and students have emerged from the pandemic with the passion to explore new initiatives and bring our strategic vision to life!

Academic Initiatives
Last month, 49 of our upper-schoolers attended the North American Invitational Model UN hosted by Georgetown University at the famed Washington Hilton. Our delegates joined over 3,000 students from 20 countries and 40 states to work in general assemblies and committees to solve pressing problems like climate change, human rights abuses and refugee resettlement. Students represented various nations and had to research their country’s economy, government and foreign policy in order to present a position paper on various topics. The conference was not all work as students had an opportunity to hear from Assistant Secretary of Defense John Kirby and ask him questions about America’s foreign policy. They also visited the National Mall to tour the Smithsonian Museums and experience the monuments and memorials (learn more).
“Writing in the Market” has become a popular elective course in our Upper School. Last fall, the juniors and seniors in this class welcomed Academy alumnus Chip Gordon ’68 – owner of Whit’s Frozen Custard in Gahanna and father of Explorers teacher Grace Gordon – to campus for a presentation of ideas to help expand his company’s social media, retain workers and enhance the brand’s presence in the area (view photos). More recently, the class presented ideas to NNEMAP Food Pantry for enhancing its footprint across Central Ohio.
Arts & Sports Recap
A pair of Academy wrestlers – junior Ceci Reitter (left) and sophomore Nina Kim – competed in the OHSAA’s inaugural state meet for girls last weekend. With her fourth-place finish in the 105-pound bracket, Ceci became the 10th Viking to place at states in the 55-year history of our wrestling program. For those who are in or near Central Florida this weekend, you are invited to come watch a free performance by the Columbus Academy Jazz Ensemble at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, March 21, on Universals CityWalk Lagoon Stage! Our jazz and concert bands will also be immersing themselves into the world of professional musicians by participating in a Disney Imagination Campus Workshop while enjoying four days at the Disney and Universal parks.
