Dr. Basil Kahwash ’06 (pictured) an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University was recently featured in the New York Times Magazine column “Diagnosis” by Dr. Lisa Sanders. In the article Basil works to solve a medical mystery where a patient is in need of his allergy and immunology insights and expertise. Read about his deductive reasoning, course of treatment and diagnosis in this month’s press clippings. Also included are alumni Avishar Barua ’05, Brian Brooks ’87, Hayden Compton ’19, Chloe Gouhin ’21, Ali Khan ’20, Michael Lai ’97, Sydni Ratliff ’21 and Ryan Seibert ’03 as well as an obituary for Peter Wilson Field ’76.

Join Us on May 23 for an Alumni Networking Reception
Join us for an Alumni Networking Reception on Monday, May 23, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Columbus Academy. Take advantage of the opportunity to network with fellow CA graduates, enjoy heavy hors doeuvres and drinks as well as learn from two young alumni who have excelled in their professions.

During the event Michael Corey ’01, Executive Director at the Human Service Chamber of Franklin County, will be honored with the 2020 Young Alumni Award. Additionally, Ryan Williams ’08, CEO and Co-Founder at Jopwell, will receive the 2022 Young Alumni Award.

The event will be moderated by Patti Zettler 98, associate professor at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Patti will facilitate a conversation between Michael and Ryan as they discuss the future of work and community building in a post-Covid world.

Registration is $10 per person. Kindly register online by May 16.
Alumni Association Welcomes Seniors
At the annual Senior-Alumni Board Luncheon last week, Alumni Board President Scott Gurwin 82 officially welcomed and congratulated Academys Class of 2022. The luncheon featured a progressive meal where groups of students were paired with an Alumni Board member to learn about their path after graduating from CA and to ask their advice as they approach graduation. 
 
Director of Alumni Relations Melissa Clarke Beckett recognized the Student Alumni Board Representatives (Aislinn Ahern, McKenna Chow, Cassidy Jones, Chris Shen, Charlie Stoner and Aleeza Yakoob) for their work this year connecting alumni and students in new and meaningful ways as well as for their commitment as class agents following graduation. 

Retiring board members, as well as several Alumni Board members who were unable to be recognized when their terms concluded due to COVID-19, were thanked for their years of service and commitment to Academy and its Alumni Association: Vanessa Butler ’07, Adam Hill ’89, Lauren Hilsheimer ’02, Ryan Huyghe ’92, Bill Moler ’55, Liz Mote ’03 and Craig Tann ’92.
All Day 4 CA Thank You
Thank you to all of our alumni who showed their Academy spirit and support during All Day 4 CA! An incredible 1,022 Vikings from 36 states and three other countries contributed $697,311 in support of our school, faculty and students. A special thanks and congratulations to the following classes who were winners of this year’s participation challenges: 1955, 1965, 1976, 1986 and 1989 (tie), 1998, 2002, 2012, 2017 and 2022!

Professional actor, director and photographer Bob Turton ’01 will serve as the guest speaker at Columbus Academy’s 109th Commencement on June 6. Bob is a 2001 graduate of Columbus Academy and 2005 graduate of Northwestern University who worked in the Chicago theatre scene before relocating to Los Angeles to build a career in film and television. He has also been a company member of The Actors’ Gang Theater — led by Academy Award-winning actor Tim Robbins — in Los Angeles for the past 12 years. “I’m so honored to meet the Class of 2022 and speak at this year’s commencement ceremony,” Bob stated. “It’s a privilege I never could have imagined 21 years ago during my own graduation from CA. Through all of my work and experience, I’ve held the core values I learned at the Academy close to my heart. I’m thrilled to return for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Congratulations to incoming Service Board President Emily Motta, Service Board Vice-President Lia Hempel and Student Council Co-Presidents Samuel Braveman and Alicia Deng on officially being installed as next year’s student leaders (view photos)! Also, a huge amount of gratitude to this past year’s leaders Gurby Vaziri and Davey Agrawal (Student Council Co-Presidents), Cyrus Hannallah (Service Board President) and Sari Shocket (Service Board VP)!
Sports News
We celebrated four more seniors last week who will continue their athletic careers on the collegiate level: Johnny H. (baseball at Hobart and William Smith Colleges), Carter J. (football at Marist College), Parker L. (football at University of Mount Union) and Henry R. (football at Hamilton College). In less than two years as our strength and conditioning coach, Shelby Reichle has earned the Program of Excellence distinction for Columbus Academy from the National High School Strength Coaches Association (NHSSCA)! This honor recognizes that Academy’s strength and conditioning program operates at the highest level of professionalism. To earn this honor, Coach Reichle and her staff have displayed excellence in safety, quality, efficacy and outreach. They have additionally displayed excellence in continuing education and technology usage in our strength and conditioning program.
