Academy Alumni In the News
|
Kevin Curry '03 (pictured with his children) has had five different crossword puzzles published by major outlets such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Inspired by an assignment to create a board game in the late Dr. Jeannine Subisak's Chinese class at Academy, Kevin was motivated to start constructing crosswords by hand for family members' birthdays. After discovering that The New York Times pays people to do this, he eventually learned from colleagues within the community how to construct unique, popular puzzles that have recently become published. Check out Kevin's puzzles by clicking the links above.

In honor of the 498 Columbus Academy alumni and seven current faculty/staff, coaches, facilities and security team members – Neal O'Brien, Ralen Cleveland, Tony DiGiovanni, Paul Molitor and Dan Olexio (U.S. Army) and Dennis Gillman and Matt Mele (U.S. Air Force) – who have served our country in one of the armed forces, the school bell atop Morris Hall chimed 505 times last Friday morning as part of our Veterans Day activities. We were thrilled that alumni veterans Bruce Draudt '62, Steve Haverick '62 and Scott Lawrence '75 participated in the ceremony, which also included a moving rendition of "America the Beautiful" by our upper school Camerata (watch video).
Events started that day with early morning PT – a typical routine of exercises that Army personnel go through as a unit, including a one-mile jog and an array of calisthenics – for students on Hondros Field (view coverage). Also, television screens around the school featured slideshows of military vernacular and acronyms to test students' knowledge of military lingo. And at lunch, food options simulated the way service members might eat on a remote base.

Alumni Holiday Luncheon on December 22
|
Don't miss this great annual event! At this year's luncheon we are pleased to honor Bob Bradway '81 as the 2023 Distinguished Alumnus and Debbie Keeran will receive the Alumni Service Award.
The event is taking place on Friday, December 22, at The Grand Event Center at Grandview Yard (820 Goodale Blvd. Grandview Heights, OH 43212).
Refreshments will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by lunch and program at noon. This year, we have coordinated with The Grand Event Center to have the space for a bit longer and allow everyone to spend extra time together immediately following the Holiday Luncheon program celebrating our honorees. An additional reason to celebrate is David Block’s 50th year teaching at Columbus Academy. If your schedule permits, we hope you will stay and enjoy a “beer with Block!”

Would you like to have a Columbus Academy upper school student intern at your organization? The summer internship program is now recruiting partner organizations nationwide with virtual opportunities or in Central Ohio with in-person opportunities for Summer 2024.
Launched in 2019, the Columbus Academy Internship Program partners with businesses and organizations to provide internship opportunities for upper school students both during the school year and in the summer. Introducing "Viking Vantage"
|
We are launching a new, recurring section called "Viking Vantage" to highlight the student experiences and career accomplishments of our amazing alumni community. By starting with the Columbus Academy Alumni Board, the hope is to provide insight into the volunteers who play an important role in advocating and promoting the alumni community at-large.
Our first Viking Vantage will recognize Ed Carter '96. Ed is a 2022 Columbus Academy Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, having earned seven varsity letters at Academy as a four-sport athlete in cross country, football, basketball and tennis. After starting all four years on the tennis team at Arizona State University, Ed continued his playing career as a professional where he participated in several doubles contests at the US Open and finished ranked in the top 600 in the world. He later attended law school at the University of Texas at Austin, then returned to Columbus where he is currently a partner at Jones Day. His brother Matt Carter '00 teaches upper school social studies, and his mother Susan Carter retired from Academy last year after serving the school for 35 years.

All are invited to join us on Friday, December 8, for the annual Empty Bowls/Soup for Shelter event at the Otterbein University Campus Center from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and include bottomless soup, bread, beverage, cookie and your choice of a handcrafted bowl made by a Columbus Academy ceramics student. Our doubles tandem of seniors Yasemin Bilgin and Arya Chabria won the Division II state doubles title last month, marking the first state crown for our girls tennis program since Sydni Ratliff '21 was the 2019 singles champion. It was our third state doubles trophy, matching Andrea Ballinger '15 & Hannah Wexner '14 in 2012 and Val Micek '09 & Christiana Raymond '10 in 2008. As a team, our Vikings were Division II state runners-up. Also, our girls golf program repeated as Division II state champions by carding a two-round score of 620 (307-313) on OSU's Gray Course to win by 17 strokes. Freshman Eva Lim led the squad with back-to-back rounds of 75 to tie for individual state runner-up honors, and our boys placed third in the state as a team.
Our football squad had its best start since 1988 by winning its first nine games of the season. The Vikes prevailed 34-18 over Utica in their playoff opener but were edged by undefeated Barnesville 19-17 in the second round. A trio of runners (juniors Clara Stevens & Melanie Qin and sophomore Dane Chaky) finished in the top 50 at the regional cross country meet, and our field hockey, soccer and volleyball teams also enjoyed successful fall seasons.
