November 2021
Academy Alumni In the News
Bob Bradway '81 (pictured), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Amgen, recently broke ground on the company's newest manufacturing plant, located in Central Ohio. While headquartered on the west coast, Amgen chose the state of Ohio due to its attractive business climate, access to a diverse and growing talent pool and the convenient location in relation to Amgen’s manufacturing and distribution networks. The manufacturing plant, based in New Albany, will feature Amgen’s most innovative and environmentally friendly assembly and packaging technologies. In addition, it’s expected to create more than 400 new jobs for Ohioans. Also included in this month's press clips are Jen Burton ’95, Collin Castore (attended '90-'92), Nick Jones ’01, Juris George Raudseps ’56, Rick Ricart '98 and Gregory White Smith '69 as well as an obituary for Donald Troy Feibel ’53.

If you have clips (either in print or on the web) to pass along for future issues, please send them to Director of Alumni Relations Melissa Clarke Beckett at beckettm@columbusacademy.org.

Partner with the Summer Internship Program
Would you like to have a Columbus Academy upper school student intern at your organization? The summer internship program is now recruiting partner organizations nationwide with virtual opportunities or in Central Ohio with in-person opportunities for Summer 2022.

Launched in 2019, the Columbus Academy Internship Program partners with businesses and organizations to provide internship opportunities for upper school students, with school-year and summer opportunities. Through internship opportunities, students engage in meaningful endeavors with problem solving, creative thinking and leadership opportunities that not only cultivate their own interests, but also deepen connections, partnerships and engagement within our community.

Save the Date: Susan Neal Lobby Dedication 1/29/22
The lobby outside of our Schoedinger Theatre will be dedicated in honor of Susan Neal on Saturday, January 29, prior to the middle school production of "Matilda the Musical Jr."

Susan began her career at Columbus Academy in 1994 wearing many hats: kindergarten assistant, seventh grade music teacher, director of the middle school musical and even middle school assistant field hockey coach. During the following 21 years leading up to her retirement, she also taught language arts, drama, step and stomp, study skills and creative expressions.

Under Susan's direction, the middle school theatre program benefited greatly from having upper school students serve as mentors, and performances were standing-room-only events. For over two decades, she not only introduced Academy students to theatre arts but also helped them blossom into talented performers.

Additional detail about the lobby dedication are forthcoming. For now please save the date of Saturday, January 29, 2022.

School News
In addition to all they are doing here on campus, Columbus Academy students have been active this fall making their voices heard to much broader audiences. For instance, senior Aniah Crockett (top left) made a video about justice in mathematical spaces and submitted it to the National Math Festival “Imagine Math Class” challenge. She also was one of 14 upper-schoolers recently recognized by the College Board for national academic honors. Malachy Sullivan (top right), meanwhile, was featured in a Ken Burns project for PBS about “Diplomacy with Native Nations.” Earlier this fall, he was one of 19 seniors named as National Merit Semifinalists. Stephen Ma (bottom left) presented a proposal (starting at the 5:52:19 mark) to the Ohio State Board of Education to add student representation to its 19-member adult board and also teamed with fellow Academy junior Arya Narayan to develop an award-winning game app, SociEmoti, that helps individuals with autism better understand and react to social situations during their daily lives.
Last spring, Columbus Academy upper-schoolers took 500 Advanced Placement (AP) exams, the highest number in school history, and we previously shared that 108 of those students were named 2021 AP Scholars. An additional noteworthy accomplishment from those results was that senior Sidd Amirneni (pictured) was one of only 62 students in the world to earn every point possible on the AP Macroeconomics Exam, receiving the maximum score on each portion of the exam! "We applaud Siddharth’s hard work,” wrote Trevor Packer, Head of the Advanced Placement Program. “This outstanding accomplishment is likely a direct reflection of the top-quality education being offered at Columbus Academy.”
Sports News
Anne Horton and Kim Stercula, who have had enormous impacts on our athletics program, school and community during their time at Columbus Academy, both announced this month that they will be retiring at the end of this academic year. Anne was brought in at the very beginning of coeducation at Academy and has coached our varsity field hockey team since its initial season in 1991. In those 31 years, her squads compiled a 526-46-29 record and claimed 12 state championships. She also led our girls lacrosse program for 25 seasons, and those teams went 332-88-8 while winning three state titles in addition to a Midwest championship before Ohio had a state tournament. In her career, which also included seven combined seasons at Asheville School (where she won two North Carolina state titles) and Lake Ridge Academy near Cleveland, Anne taught physical education for 32 years and coached multiple other sports. At the end of her 38th season coaching field hockey, she earned her 600th career victory, making her just the 11th high school field hockey coach in the country to ever reach that milestone.

Kim was hired as our head athletic trainer in 2001 and has provided Academy’s student-athletes with the highest level of care for the past 21 years while also mentoring many young athletic trainers. She was the 2005 Athletic Trainer of the Year in Ohio and was inducted into the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame earlier this year. Please join us in thanking these two incredible women for all they have done for our community!
We were excited to celebrate four seniors at our first athletic signing celebration of the school year on November 10. Congratulations to the following students who have committed to continuing their athletic careers on the collegiate level (from left):

  • Ella Morris, field hockey at DePauw University

  • Zach White, lacrosse at The University of Utah

  • Evie Gee, lacrosse at Radford University

  • Blake Skilken, diving at The Ohio State University
