September 2023
Academy Alumni in the News
U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Lt. George Winger '36, whose plane was shot down during a bombing mission in World War II, was accounted for earlier this year after more than 70 years. According to the Columbus Dispatch article published last week, Winger's B-24 Liberator was one of 177 planes that participated in Operation Tidal Wave. He was accounted for on January 24, 2023, after several years of anthropological and DNA analysis done for the unaccounted-for airmen of Operation Tidal Wave. In 2018, Academy alumna Carolyn Vaziri '22 wrote a profile of Winger for our student-led newspaper, Academy Life, and her sister Elizabeth Vaziri '11 also featured him in the documentary "Academy Boys: World War II" produced in 2010 for Academy's Centennial. To indicate he has been accounted for, Winger will have a rosette added next to his name on the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery in Impruneta, Italy. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be determined.

David Block 50: Alumni Art Exhibit Coming in 2024
In honor of his 50 years of teaching art at Columbus Academy, the Fine Arts Department is organizing an exhibit to celebrate the creativity and talent of David Block's former students. The exhibit will take place in our art gallery located in Morris Hall beginning in mid-January 2024. Remembering 9/11
To remember 9/11 each year, art teacher David Block hangs this project by alumna Blair Soden ’02 in our Morris Hall Art Gallery. Blair was a senior at Academy in September 2001 and handmade an American flag in response to the attacks on 9/11. She noted how it "reads like a book" and speaks to the strength gained through tragedy. "To me, it represented our country being torn apart, attacked, but in the days and weeks that followed, made more resilient and stronger as a result." The flag pictured here will be on display in our art gallery through the end of September. Click here for more about the inspiration and process for this project.

During Monday morning’s assembly, upper school faculty member and alumnus Tim Morford ‘79, who serves as the Rainey S. Taylor History Chair, provided our upper-schoolers with perspective on this tragic event in our nation’s history that happened 22 years ago. Click here to watch Tim's commentary as he described his take on a moving photograph he found of first responders at Ground Zero on 9/11 and the importance to "look for the helpers."
Visitor from Ghana Meets Academy Alumna and Faculty
In late August, Director of Student Outreach Pedro Mena hosted Edem Kojo Doe, who is the Assistant Horticultural Officer and Head of the Parks and Gardens Unit for the Office of the President for the Republic of Ghana in Accra. While on campus, Edem took a tour of our outdoor learning spaces including the Susan Peck '14 Greenhouse, Crane Outdoor Learning Center, arboretum and new learning meadow.

Edem met with faculty members Heather Downey, who showed him around our greenhouse, and Luke Howard, who gave him a tour of his company The Bee Collective. A welcome dinner was also hosted for Edem who joined Pedro, our Director of Diversity & Community Life Dr. Pascal Losambe, The Ankamah Family, The Asare Family and Academy alumna Rebecca Amonor '17.
