Letter from the President
A
s we begin a new year I would like to thank the members of our board that volunteer their time in support of our profession. I am also excited to work side by side with all these talented individuals to continue to make AIA Arkansas what it is today. As part of this AIA Arkansas team, I want to welcome some newer members of Brent Stevenson's staff. Laneigh Pfalser with be serving as the communications director and Jennifer Johnson will oversee member services. We appreciate the work BSA does to assist us in our daily operations.
We have an exciting year ahead of us. This month AIA Arkansas will be sending a group from the board to Detroit for the national Grassroots leadership conference. The attendees will be Patty Opitz, Jim Little and Adam Day. The rest of us are praying for good weather and hope you are not forced to drive back (Snowmageddon in D.C.). In April the board will be working with a facilitator to review and update the Strategic Plan created in 2010 by the board under the leadership of Past President, Jerry Brackett.
This year, our state convention will be held in Rogers from November 3-5. Convention Chair, Lori Yazwinski Santa-Rita has her committee in place and they are already hard at work to make it another wonderful event. AIA Arkansas has partnered with the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design to host the 2016 Gulf States Emerging Professionals Symposium, a workshop with the mission to "build better leaders and architects." The symposium will take place on September 23 - 25 on the U of A campus.
AIA Arkansas continues to support strong relationships with the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design and studioMAIN. Under the leadership of Dean Peter MacKeith, the school continues to play a vital role in the architectural profession within the state. Along with the Gulf States Emerging Professionals Symposium, the school with be hosting several events throughout the year including an alumni weekend celebrating the 70th year of the program. studioMAIN continues to be a strong voice that promotes collaboration between the general public and the design professions. We appreciate their leadership and will continue to work with them to support common goals.
As the year moves forward, I look forward to hearing from each of you. Your knowledge and ideas will only make our organization grow stronger. We have committees, legislative and educational events, state convention and many more activities scheduled for you to be involved in. Happy New Year and Go Team!

Fay Jones Grad, Joseph Weishaar Wins Commission for WWI Memorial in D.C.
Guys, this is kind of a big deal.
One of our own Fay Jones graduates, Joseph Weishaar (2013 graduate) was granted the commission for the National World War I Memorial in Washington D.C.
His proposal, titled "The Weight of Sacrifice," was one of 350 proposals and will be the first full memorial in Washington D.C. to commemorate WWI.
The goal is for the memorial to be ready in November 2018 for the 100th anniversary of the end of conflict, said Chris Isleib, a spokesman for the World War One Centennial Commission.
We want to give a huge congratulations to him on being commissioned for such a great piece. Do us proud, Joseph!
