Another Award
National Maritime Historical Society recognition!
We are pleased to announce that PortSide's Founder & Director Carolina Salguero is one of the recipients of the National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS)
"New York Harbor Historic Ship Steward Award of Excellence." The NMHS is celebrating their 50th anniversary this weekend. We learned of the award shortly before the events; and in order to make the MARY A. WHALEN available for the NMHS tour, we are moving her arpund 1500 today to Pier 11, Atlantic Basin.
Profuse thanks to the Port Authority, NYC's Economic Development Corporation and BillyBey, the new operators of Atlantic Basin, for so rapidly green lighting our visit to Atlantic Basin! We really appreciate it.
Open House for MARY A WHALEN's 75th Birthday, Tues 5/21
Visit us on Pier 11, Atlantic Basin, Red Hook, Brooklyn
Our short stay in Atlantic Basin for NMHS makes the ship available on her 75th birthday!
PortSide will host a MARY A. WHALEN Open House on Tuesday 5/21/23 from 1-7pm, with cake and remarks from 5-7pm.
Come see the only oil tanker cultural center in the world! On the National Register of Historic Places!
Access the MARY A. WHALEN on Pier 11 in Atlantic Basin via the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal pedestrian gate at Pioneer Street and Conover Street. Bicycles, dogs and children welcome!
We only recently learned the MARY A. WHALEN's actual launch date IS May 21 due to research by noted maritime historian Norman Brouwer. Thank you, Norman!
Thanks to Vane Brothers for donating the tow from our current berth to Atlantic Basin. We are very excited to be towed by their brand new tug, named in honor of our favorite neighorhood, the RED HOOK. Vane's NYC operations are based at the site of Ira S. Bushey's yard in Red Hook, where the MARY A. WHALEN first began her working life. Towing industry friends, if you would like to tow us back next Wednesday, please get in touch.
We would like to take this occasion to give BillyBey Ferry a warm welcome to Red Hook as the new operators of Atlantic Basin via the EDC's new DockNYC program! It's been a great fast-action experience working with them on this.
