Late Spring 2023

Believe in Better:

It's the People

The Helena community teems with activities this time of year. Running the gamut from races to arts festivals to rodeos and music events, Helena offers something for everyone, made possible by those who plan, execute, and volunteer to make things happen. All these activities are intended to do more than provide entertainment. They play a key role in building a sense of community. Building community is serious business at Mountain View Meadows. Building community is more than building houses--It’s about building a foundation that allows people to thrive, pursue their interests, develop skills, and give back to their community. “The people at Mountain View Meadows are the success behind community,” said Rebecca Ryland, Director of Design. “People here take pride in their homes, answer the call to help a neighbor, volunteer their time pulling weeds in parks and work behind the scenes creating community events and activities. It’s the people who make Mountain View Meadows a special place to live. We couldn’t do this without them.” The 4th of July Community Celebration is the next big happening at Mountain View Meadows. Held annually at Mountain View Park, the event is sponsored by Mountain View Meadows, LLC, Mountain View Meadows HOA, Sierra Custom Homes, Stahly Engineering and Blue Cross Blue Shield. A variety of family-oriented activities staffed by resident volunteers fill the afternoon and evening starting at 3:00 PM and ending at 10. The 4th of July Community Celebration is free and open to the general public, a way for the people at Mountain View Meadows to give back to the greater Helena community to create a better place for all to live.

Building a Better Community:

Bounce Houses, Live Music, Cuban Food, Games & Kids Parade!

Join us for the 4th of July Community Celebration, Tuesday, July 4 at Mountain View Park. It’s all free (except for food vendors) and open to the public! The celebration kicks off at 3:00 PM with the “Chalk Up the Block” chalk artwork competition and display at the park pavilion with ribbon awards categories for artists of all ages. The basketball “Best of 10 Showdown” for kids 10-18 runs concurrently on the basketball court with a $10 prize in each of three age categories to the competitor who shoots the best of 10 from the free-throw line. At 6:00, get ready for the Kids Push, Pull & Pedal Parade; a fun event where kids decorate their bikes, trikes, wagons, buggies, scooters, wheel barrows and the like – literally any non-motorized contraption that can be pushed, pulled or pedaled – dress up in costume and parade around the park. After the parade, two bounce houses open free of charge; the Popstar for kids 5 & under and the Pirate Ship for kids up to 12. At 6:30 the single-elimination Horsey Shoe Competition for teens and adults gets underway. Teams of two sign up to play whoever wins the game before them. Play continues till 8:30 PM or whenever the judge decides--he makes the rules. The team left standing wins! The BO&CO. band strikes up live at 7:00 PM. Tap your toe to their pop bluegrass and country style of music including a few originals with lead vocals by founder Bo Pirre. Bring along your picnic basket or check out fares of local food vendors including the Habana406 food truck with Cuban and Caribbean delights prepared by Mountain View Meadows Residents Adonis Garzon and Maie Jones. It’s the real deal! Or for a treat, visit the Kettlecorn Café. Although the event ends at 10, feel free to sit back and enjoy the East Helena Prickly Pear Fireworks Display from the best views in Helena. Want to help build a better community? Volunteer or sign-up to play by emailing [email protected].

Where to Live?

Want to cut down on that morning commute and enjoy closer proximity to work, schools, parks, medical facilities, shopping and entertainment? Want the added security of police and fire protection, reliable sewer and water services and walkable neighborhoods? Then living in a city may be the right choice for you.

Cities typically have jurisdiction over building practices which help ensure a home is built to industry standards and national energy codes. For this reason choosing to live in a city may prove less expensive in heating and maintenance costs for your home. And you can feel confident your home rests on a solid foundation.

It is estimated that most households make five or more vehicle trips per day for work, school, doctor appointments, shopping, etc. Choosing to live as little as five to ten miles outside the city may add as much as $500 to your monthly budget in transportation fuel costs alone. Ouch!

Cities encourage higher density building. If you are earth-conscious, you may want to leave a smaller footprint. “Leaving a smaller footprint” means taking up less personal space and preserving more land for farming, ranching, recreation, and wildlife.

The value of a “country way of life” cannot be over stressed. If you want to ranch, farm, grow a big garden, ride horses, raise chickens or sheep, ride 4-wheelers and dirt bikes then living in the city is not for you. If you choose to live in the country, you contribute to preserving cultural diversity and lifestyle choices and help by providing land for food production and wildlife habitat.

If country life is not your style, you can still contribute to preserving cultural diversity. When you choose to live in a city, you contribute to protecting a country way of life for others while preserving more land outside the city for protecting natural resources and wildlife habitat.

Choosing to live in a city allows you the opportunity to take advantage of the resources and services that come with city living. It allows you to contribute through your tax dollars to the health, vibrancy and well-being of your community. And it provides the advantage of creating sustainable and diverse communities by protecting and preserving rural, agricultural and recreational lands that benefit the greater community. But is it right for you? Only you can tell.

Benefits and Updates:
MOUNTAIN VIEW MEADOWS

1. VOUNTEERS NEEDED FOR 4TH OF JULY COMMUNITY CELEBRATION:  Come have fun with us! Volunteer to take same-day sign-ups at activities, judge contests, manage the Horsey Shoe Competition or Best of 10 Basketball Showdown. Give as little as two hours to help make this annual event a resounding success. To volunteer, call 406.422.8107 or email [email protected].

2.  SIGN UP FOR ACTIVITIES: No matter your age, there is something for everyone at the upcoming 4th of July Community Celebration – And you don’t have to be a resident of Mountain View Meadows to participate! All activities are free and open to the public. Registration forms for the Kids Push, Pull & Pedal Parade, Basketball "Best of 10" Showdown, Chalk up the Block Sidewalk Chalk Art Event, and the friendly Horsey-Shoe Competition are available by email at [email protected] or by stopping by the MVM office at 431 S. Alice St. Last-minute registration is accepted, but it sure helps the volunteers if you sign-up in advance.

3.  HONOR YOUR LOVED ONE: Know someone you would like to honor for their service? Would you like to remember in a unique way your mother or father or anyone who brought special meaning to your life? If so, you can donate a flowering perennial or small shrub to plant in the brand-new Peace Park Memorial Gardens along with a small garden sign with a personal tribute to your loved one. For details how to donate, please email [email protected]. Plants may only be accepted on certain days and times during the planting season. Thanks for considering taking part in this ongoing community project.

4. KEEP YOUR DOG LEASHED: Too many close calls already this year between dogs and cars, pets and people and pets and pets warrant a reminder that the human on one end of the leash needs to make certain that the animal on the other end is actually secured to the leash. Animals-at-large are against the law in Helena. Please be a responsible pet owner. Your dog can’t leash itself.

5. PLEASE REMOVE OLDER MESH TREE PROTECTORS: It’s time to check the mesh tree protectors on your boulevard trees. Typically, protectors need to remain on for 2-3 years until trees are ready to withstand critters. After about 3 years, trunks may start growing into the mesh. To avoid damaging your trees, be sure to remove the mesh before that point.

The Best in Our

Neighborhood:

Say Thanks to Those Who Give

Melinda Schell and Abby enjoying a rest at the corner of the beautiful Pergola Pocket Park.

Life, work, school, family--not everyone has the time or energy to give back to their community outside their personal obligations. But as you look around your neighborhoods this summer, take the time to notice those who do. Since launching the “Adopt-a-Park” program, MaryLee Van Voast has put her green thumb to good use, transforming a struggling flower bed in the Pergola Park into a gorgeous display of color. Last year MaryLee planted tulips. We were all surprised and delighted this spring to see the new additions pop up. MaryLee is often seen on her hands and knees pulling weeds and providing tender loving care to the Pergola Park, giving of her time to keep it looking amazing for everyone to enjoy. Now, take a walk to the Sunrise Park to see one of the most well-kept oasis in Mountain View Meadows. Dick & Brandy Johnson along with Jennie & Charles Nemec keep the weeds at bay in the flower beds so that you can kick back on the park bench and enjoy the sun rising in the east. Of course, you can enjoy a rest in the Sunrise Park any time of day and when you do, give a thanks to your neighbors for keeping it looking so good. When out and about you’re sure to see others lending a helping hand: Dick and Linda Burns pulling weeds around the junipers near the Peace Park; Lindsay and Dahlia Gehring working on the Books & Letters Park; folks pulling a weed here or there, picking up trash and keeping things in order. And if you look behind the scenes, you’ll probably catch Toni and Jerry Guay, winners of this year’s “Neighbor of the Year,” award doing something for someone somewhere. Thank you to all who make Mountain View Meadows special. We do notice and appreciate all you do. You’re the best!

Fun & Fitness

Let's Go

Fly A Kite!

One of the best parts of living at Mountain View Meadows is enjoying space to fly a kite. Kite flying delights kids in a fun and educational way. Kids can learn about science, physics, aerodynamics, weather and ecology just by flying a kite! But the benefits don’t stop there. Flying a kite helps develop hand-eye coordination, kinesthetic awareness and gross motor skills.

Flying a kite is great for adults, too. It exercises eye muscles by watching the bobbing shapes while looking up helps stretch your spine, counteracting some of the effects of sitting at a desk all day. Looking up also stretches the neck and shoulder muscles to promote flexibility. And, believe it or not, you can have a blast burning calories flying a kite.

“We all know we have to exercise to offset the calories we consume,” reads a post on the website www.sports-fitness.co.uk. “Unfortunately, most traditional exercises aren’t always the most fun. But flying a kite actually offers various benefits as an exercise activity. You can burn more calories spending an afternoon flying kites than you might expect! From trekking to a good spot to fly your kite to the way that it works out your core muscles, it's an excellent reason to get out of doors more often and explore the world.”

With fields, hillsides and Mountain View Park nearby you can find an open space at Mountain View Meadows to try your hand at kite flying. And it costs minimally to get started. Regular kites have a very low initial cost, and one kite can provide endless hours of exercise and entertainment.

“Wanting to be a better kite flyer is clearly an excellent motivator for getting you to work out more traditionally, too,” the post goes on to say. “Improving your arm and core strength will certainly help you to maneuver your kite even in the toughest winds, putting you on your way to being an expert in handling a kite. Explore your options and think how much more fun you can have exercising. Take to the skies and change the way you see fitness!”

What do Kids

say about Community?

From playing on the basketball and tennis courts to skateboarding on the sidewalks to riding bikes on the Fun & Fitness Trail, kids tell us a lot about what they enjoy and what they seek in a community. Kids get a bad rap for spending too much time on social media. But if you look around Mountain View Meadows, you’ll see lots of kids outside enjoying themselves, getting together to play one on one, exercising, practicing sports and socializing. Kids also take time to give back to their communities.  I recently had the opportunity to see two of our young residents share their talents in a play at Helena High School. Luke and Logan Wilkins lead the cast of characters in “Rip Van Winkle.” If you’ve never been in a play, you can’t imagine the time and commitment it takes! Mark and I have watched a number of the kids from Mountain View Meadows participating in track meets with our grandsons, Adam and Travis this spring. We can tell you that our community was well represented on the track and the field! And then, of course, there is seven-year-old Dahlia Gehring, who we mentioned in the "Best in Our Neighborhood” story. Dahlia has been helping out picking up trash and pulling weeds at Mountain View Meadows since she was five. Dahlia is also one of the best advocates for the 4th of July Community Celebration. Dahlia loves the Kids Push, Pull & Pedal Parade and the Chalk Up the Block art event. Check out below the essay Dahlia wrote for school. It says everything you need to know about the value of community!
