A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

“My child is learning by LEAPS and bounds!” -Parent

“I’m so proud of them! [teaching assistants pursuing their education] It was a big LEAP for them to take!” -Children’s Center staff member

“Come LEAP with us!” -Board member

As a parent, I remember those times when it seemed that my child suddenly took a big leap forward. One day they were sounding out words, the next, day, it seemed, they were reading fluently. One day, they could barely crawl. Suddenly, they were running across the room. I know that those big developmental changes which seem to happen so quickly are actually the result of effort, practice, trial and error. Overnight it seems like all that work becomes integrated into something new.

This month, IVYP will make our big change and become LEAP: Learn. Engage. Advocate. Partner. As with any big change, our new name is the result of tremendous work, communication, and intentionality, and will take time to become natural. I invite you to join us on May 17 at our LEAP awards to hear what our families have to say about our becoming LEAP. We’ll share with you the story behind our name and celebrate Steve Ortiz and Jordan Killebrew, our 2023 honorees. The event is free and virtual – you can join from your desk. I hope you’ll give us one hour of your time. I promise you’ll leave feeling inspired.

Lori Goodman
Executive Director
Jordan Killebrew

“I nominated Jordan because he brings incredible knowledge, dedication, and joy to all the work he does in our community. Juneteenth SB, the Hosford Clinic’s Healing Center, the FUND for Santa Barbara, Healing Justice, Project IV Love, the Community Formation Commission, reading picture books to sheltered-in-place kids on a video stream for Chocolate Baby Story Time - anything Jordan is involved in makes an indelible impact.” - Laura Duncan Wilgus, IVYP Board Member
Steve Ortiz

“I’ve seen this sense of community in all the work that Steve does now. Having access to those kinds of programs in his youth built an important foundation for his personal and professional development. So much of his commitment and drive comes from his belief in those programs and his dedication to providing those same opportunities to the next generation.” - Amber K. Ortiz CFP®, CEPA

Harvest of the Month

Did you know that avocados are technically berries? Unlike other fruits like apples or oranges, which are classified as "pomes" or "hesperidia," avocados are actually classified as a type of berry called a "drupe." This is because they have a fleshy pulp surrounding a hard seed or pit, which is a characteristic of drupe fruits. In fact, avocados are one of the largest berries in the world, with some varieties growing up to the size of a cantaloupe! This recipe features avocados, tomatoes, red onions, and more for a delicious, nutritious, and refreshing salad.

IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s General Donation Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
