As we gather in fellowship this February, we are filled with gratitude and anticipation to honor Black History Month. Throughout this significant month, we will unite to recognize the invaluable contributions and enduring legacy of Black individuals in shaping our world and our faith.

During our upcoming services and events, we invite you to join us in reflecting on the rich tapestry of Black history, from the profound spiritual leadership to the unwavering commitment to justice and equality. It is our shared responsibility to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity of experiences and perspectives that have enriched our church community and our collective journey of faith.

Together, let us embrace this opportunity to deepen our understanding, nurture empathy, and reaffirm our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our congregation. Our shared exploration of Black history can serve as a catalyst for unity, compassion, and growth within our church family.

During this month, we encourage you to subscribe to this free newsletter, 28 Days of Black History,  whose focus this year is on artists. (Click the Subscribe link in the header, below.) You really must click the Archive Link (further in the newsletter) and listen to Hazel Scott play two grand pianos at the same time (February 4)!!! This newsletter is an opportunity for us to experience the breadth of courageous African Americans who changed our world through their talent and artistry. It is an opportunity to expand our knowledge beyond the most recognized and celebrated leaders of African American history such as the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcom X, Rosa Parks, Harriett Tubman, Frederick Douglas, and other beloved s/heroes. This is an invitation to deepen our appreciation for and be inspired by the multitude of unsung and rarely known African Americans whose gifts have blessed our world!

"If you have known the cruelty of ostracization, and in some ways, we all have, if you have known or seen the doors of a church, or a school, or office shut against you because of some changeable or unchangeable feature of your identity, know this; you are the song of the One who calls out from the wilderness."

Thoughtful Insights From Reverend Charles Hartman

When Roger Williams was forced out of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636, he made his way to the banks of the Seekonk River and began his settlement in what is now East Providence. When the Plymouth Colony leaders objected he moved to what is now Providence and settled there. He did this with the cooperation and blessings of Canonicus, the sachem of the Narragansett people. The Baptist are indebted to the indigenous people in their struggle to survive and flourish. Baptists and the Narragansett people now have a long history that include important figures like Princess Redwing who was a member of the Berean Baptist congregation in Harrisville. Now we encourage support for the efforts to relocate the Tomaquag Museum from Exeter to a site on the URI campus

On The Spiritual Journey: Rocks and Roots

“finding a path through the wilderness”: a sermon and four sessions

Join us as we explore of what it means to grow spiritually. We seek spiritual growth in order to sustain our faith and practice in our daily walk. Using the metaphor of “wilderness,” we will read and reflect on passages from scripture, poets, theologians, and mystics. As we discover both personal and corporate pathways through “wilderness” both real and metaphorically, we will share questions and seek wisdom about those things challenging us as persons,

communities and as the church.

Our format begins with the sermon on February 25: Rocks and Roots: “Let’s Talk about the Walk”. We will follow that sermon with four zoom sessions. Each one will continue to explore themes introduced through the sermon.

Registration forms are available In Rhodes Hall

Please choose the time best for you. We will announce a final schedule when everyone has had a chance to

register. Please sign up soon.

We encourage folks to commit to all four sessions as each one builds on the previous one.

Faithful Reflections: Excerpts from Scripture

Office Administrator and Community Care Coordinator

Ms. Taisha Thompson

Reflecting on Acts 17:26, we are reminded of the profound truth that all of humanity shares a common origin and purpose. The verse states, "From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands."

This verse serves as a powerful affirmation of the interconnectedness of all people and the divine intention behind the diversity of nations and cultures. It emphasizes that despite our differences, we are ultimately part of a shared human family, intricately woven together by the hand of God.

In the context of Black history or any cultural observance, Acts 17:26 can be a source of inspiration and contemplation. It prompts us to recognize and honor the diverse tapestry of human experience, acknowledging the unique contributions and narratives of every individual and community.

From a standpoint of faith, this verse invites us to approach our interactions with humility, empathy, and an appreciation for the rich mosaic of human existence. It calls us to seek understanding and unity, recognizing that each person's heritage and identity is part of God's intentional design.

Ultimately, Acts 17:26 encourages us to embrace the beauty of our shared humanity while celebrating the distinct backgrounds and journeys that have shaped us. It calls us to view differences not as barriers, but as opportunities for mutual learning, respect, and the expression of God's infinite creativity.

As we reflect on Acts 17:26, may we be moved to embrace the diversity of the human experience with gratitude, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to fostering unity and understanding within our communities and beyond.

Amen

CCOP Annual Easter Celebrations

As we prepare for our Annual Easter Egg Hunt, we are kindly asking for your support in the form of candy donations. We would greatly appreciate any contributions of individually wrapped candy to help fill the eggs for the hunt.

Donations can be dropped off at the church office during regular business hours, or brought to any of our upcoming services. Your generosity will help make this year's Easter Egg Hunt a memorable and enjoyable experience for our children.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our church community.

We are excited to announce the launch of the Children's Prayer-Ground at the back of our sanctuary!

We understand that attending religious services with young children can sometimes be challenging, as they may become restless and need a space of their own. That's why we have created a special area in the back of the sanctuary just for them.

The Children's Prayer-Ground offers a safe and welcoming environment for children to play and explore while still allowing their parents or guardians to follow the service.

Join American Baptist Women of RI Saturday, March 16 at the Norwood Baptist Church in Warwick for our annual spiritual retreat. Rev. Dr. Reppa Cottrell and Donna Sherman will be leading the bible study and reflection in the morning and the afternoon will include workshops and time to share. The $20.00 fee includes lunch.  Registration deadline is March 2
