CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY

IN NORTH GEORGIA CONFERENCE

February is Black History Month, a season to pay tribute to the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans for their role in U.S. history. Organizers chose February for the celebration to coincide with the birth dates of President Lincoln and abolitionist and former enslaved person Frederick Douglass.

The United Methodist Church has benefited enormously from the contributions of African American clergy, laity, and community members.

Here in North Georgia, some of the history makers and milestones include:

In 1971 the Black "Georgia Conference" and white "North Georgia Conference" merged into one conference following the general church merger in 1968. Some of the key African American participants in the process were: Reverends A. C. Epps, J. D. Grier, C. L. Henderson, C. S. Stinson, Frank W. Montgomery, Robert Stovall, M. J. Wynn, P. Harold Gray, M. J. Jones, E. W. McMillan, A. S. Dickerson, Harry Backstrom, and laity including Dr. Earle Wilson, Mr. James Jackson, and Ms. Lillie F. Arnold.

Since the merger, three African American clergy have been elected to the Episcopacy from the North Georgia Conference: Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson, Bishop Jonathan Holston, and Bishop Sharma Lewis Logan.

SMALL ACTS OF KINDNESS

CAN MAKE A BIG IMPACT!

From the Mission Outreach Mobilization Team

As we experience cold or rainy days this winter, we will see more people in crisis looking for help. You may ask yourself "What Should I Do?" "How Do I Help?"

In some cases we make assumptions, jump to conclusions, sometimes we turn away, or maybe we look for some cash or coins.

What do you do when you see someone experiencing homelessness or crisis? What is your response when they ask for money?

Our local partners at the City of Refuge have shared with us their recommendation to make and keep a few kits in your car that you can hand out. This could include:

Bottled Water, Socks, Granola bars, Peanut Butter Cracker,

Gum, Travel Peanut Butter Cups,

Travel Kleenex, Chapstick

Travel Toothbrush/Toothpaste

During winter months: hand warmers, gloves, socks, and hats

Preloaded MARTA Breeze cards.

Together, we can all take small actions that make a big impact in someone's life.

The GBHEM Scholarship Portal Is Now Open

The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) scholarship application portal is open for United Methodist students seeking scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study at colleges, universities and seminaries in the United States. Potential scholarships awarded range from $500 to $1,200, on average.

In 2024, GBHEM awarded more than 2,100 scholarships, valued at nearly $3.7 million, to undergraduate and graduate students at 509 U.S. schools. This financial aid helped students of all backgrounds pursue their dreams and education to serve as the next generation of leaders.

The Scholarships Office administers more than 70 scholarship programs with one general application. Students may submit one application per year, which will be screened for the appropriate scholarship program.

Scholarship programs are divided into three categories:

The deadline to complete the application is Monday, March 31, 2025. Email umscholar@gbhem.org for more information.

TO MY CENTRAL FAMILY!

Words alone cannot convey my sincerest gratitude for your continued loving support extended to me and my family, collectively and individually, throughout the pass griefs and losses of family members, and most recently, the profound transitioning of my beloved husband, Charles N. Harris. Your spirited compassion and the many love acts received have been needed pillars of comfort, peace, and strength in my ongoing healing process. May God's glorious power of deliverance continue to bless and enrich your lives and hearts abundantly, for the service and nurturing you so lovingly give to others throughout their times of special needs and challenges in life.

Prayerfully and gratefully with love always,

                                                                      Ann Harris and Family
