I will give thanks!

All are welcome this Sunday to the 9:30 (choir led) and 11:00 (band led) worship services! And following services, come celebrate Mark Edwards as we say fare thee well!

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart! -Psalm 111:1
Message from Pastor Jon
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

With sadness, we say goodbye to Mark this Sunday. As our Contemporary Music Director, Mark has led worship with passion and love. Many know how incredibly gifted Mark is with the guitar. Check out his website www.markedwardsguitar.com for a taste of his versatility and talent. Gifted musicians give glory to God. I am thankful for the ways he has led us to awe.

More impressive, I think, is Mark's presence. When I first saw Mark lead worship, I was happy to see a leader who wasn't acting or putting on an affect. He was genuine. His smile brightened many a dark day. However tired or weary we came into worship, Mark would lead the band in jolting us into joy. Because Mark is kind, caring, and attentive, he formed a band that is more like a small group. They pray with each other, share their lives with one another, and praise together. You can witness their bond in their worship.

Mark has also been an active leader of our youth. At LOGOS, he taught them how to lead worship. They have always been inspired by his humility and fun-loving spirit. The many youth and young adults that attend the GenOn Youth Summit love Mark. He has been vulnerable with them about his own struggles, and they have learned from his strength. I am very glad that Mark will be working with youth in his new job. He really is called to inspire students with music.

Maybe most impressive of all is Mark's appetite. I have never seen a person eat so much! Who is going to clean out the church fridge now?

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate Mark's music ministry and send him off. He will play a song at the 9:30 service and will lead the band at 11:00. Following the 11 am service, we will have a farewell luncheon for him.

Verse and Prayer
My child, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, so that you may hold on to prudence, and your lips may guard knowledge.
-Proverbs 5:1-2

Healing, sovereign God, overmatch our resistant ears with your transforming speech. Penetrate our jadedness and fatigue. Touch our yearnings by your words. Through your out-loudness, draw us closer to you. We are ready to listen. Amen.
- Walter Brueggemann

Notes for you!
As I prepare musical selections, I always read through the scripture readings.  This week, I was struck by newly-crowned King Solomon’s request for discernment, something that we still seem to lack societally, even a few thousand years after Solomon’s reign. Additionally, some of you may be aware that yet another white supremacy gathering took place in Washington D.C. last weekend. Both of these themes guided my music selection for this Sunday. For the benediction, you’ll hear our request for discernment through the voice of an anonymous African-American composer (as no one ever wrote down the names of the composers of spirituals), “Guide My Feet.”

Celebration Luncheon
Celebrate Mark this Sunday!
This Sunday, August 19th, will be Mark Edwards’ last day in worship with us. After the second service, you are invited to join in a celebration luncheon in honor of Mark. Mark has been directing our band at the 11:00 worship service for the past ten years, leading our youth band, and has been a key leader for worship skills during our LOGOS program, as well as the annual GenOn Youth Summit. You can sign up for the luncheon HERE. If you’d like to contribute to a church-wide gift for Mark, you may drop it in a labeled envelope in the offering plate, or visit our giving page HERE. Questions? Amy Tardiff (itsmemim@gmail.com), Wendy Wellington (swt520@verizon.net).
Outreach and Connection
August Book Club

An experience of God's presence may seem extraordinary. However, according to Tish Harrison Warren's book, Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life, we can encounter God in the ordinary and everyday. Join us for a discussion of Warren's book this Tuesday, August 21, 7 pm. The book is available on Amazon and most booksellers. Contact Pastor Jon with any questions (jgnelson1985@gmail.com).
