December 2018 at Place des Arts
Home to our arts community
It's time to kick-start the holiday season and we've got two engaging events coming up for you to do so in fine festive fashion!

On Friday, December 7 adults (19+) can get in the holiday spirit at our second pARTy@PdA of the season: Festive Felting.

On Sunday, December 9, the whole family is invited to Reflections: A Celebration of Cultural Diversity to discover how our cultural traditions and customs are entwined at this time of year.

Our Christmas Boutique is open and filled with an Aladdin's treasure trove of hand-crafted ornaments, decorations and gifts lovingly made by artisans in our community. And, if you have an art lover or have someone on your gift list who has all the mod-cons, check out the beautiful miniature artworks in our Positively Petite: Annual Miniature Exhibition.

Don't forget to register for the winter session! Classes are filling up quickly and you don't want to miss out on your favourite.

Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones from all of us at Place des Arts!

Pam's Pals Featured in the Christmas Boutique
If you've stopped by our Christmas Boutique this season, you've likely enjoyed seeing the wonderful fellow pictured at left or another one of Pam Leitch's fabulous "Country Critters."

Pam is a new artisan in this year's boutique, and her intricately crafted fairy tale-inspired creatures are a big hit. Pam started making stuffed bunnies over 25 years ago as gifts for the children in her life. As her technique improved, she moved on to other animals and creatures and eventually started selling them at craft fairs.

Be sure to check out our Christmas Boutique to see Pam's critters in person, plus many more lovingly handcrafted items made by our local artisans.

Artist in Residence Elicits Kid's Stories
Our current artist in residence Molly Billows, Northern Coast Salish from the Homalco Nation, has been leading school field-trip workshops in storytelling over the past few weeks.

Using art and storytelling, Molly has guided the students to explore themes of home, ancestry, memory and connection.
The personal and collective reflections they create in the workshops will make up a soundscape for the Celebration of Diversity that wraps up our Reflections event on December 9.

Place des Arts is grateful for the financial support from the Province of BC and the City of Coquitlam which has allowed us to provide Molly's Artist-in-Residence workshops for free to local schools.

See Jake's Gift at Evergreen
We highly recommend you take in the poignant Jake's Gift, on stage at the Evergreen Cultural Centre from December 11 - 15th.

Jake's Gift is a multi-award winning Canadian play about a World War II veteran's reluctant return to Normandy, France for the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. At its heart, Jake's Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier's grave.

Jake's Gift is written and performed by Julia Mackey, who plays both an 80-year-old war veteran and a 10-year-old girl.

"Jake's Gift is theatre in its purest form. It is an instant love affair between performer and audience. This is a jewel of a show you simply can't afford to miss."
