A NOTE FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR
|
|
Dear community,
As we enter into the second week of June, I am struck by how different the library landscape looks this month. We are in our second week of receiving your returned library materials and today we started our Curbside Pick-up service. Just two weeks ago, Library staff were all either teleworking or providing emergency service work to the City of Redwood City. To say that we've had to pivot and reinvent how we deliver service would be an understatement!
With the bookdrops open at the Downtown Library, we are receiving a mountain of materials back from you. We have developed policies and practices to ensure the safe exchange of library materials between our staff and customers. Our staff practice San Mateo County Health Department and CDC recommended safety practices while handling customer returns and curbside pickup materials. We are on alternating week rotations, wear PPE and maintain social distancing at all times. In addition, all incoming materials a
re quarantined for 72 hours before they are made available to the public. If you haven't rushed to return your materials, never fear, the due dates have been extended to July 31.
This afternoon, we launched our Curbside Pick-up service to a completely full appointment calendar. The service runs Tuesday and Wednesday, 3pm-7pm and Thursday through Saturday, 10am-2pm. We have developed a system to ensure that this process is safe for our customers and employees. It's as simple as placing your hold, scheduling an appointment when it's available, and arriving at the Downtown Library for pick-up. Go here to

Our Youth Services staff have been hard at work on the Summer Learning Challenge.
In the last two weeks they visited 13 elementary and middle schools to promote the summer learning challenge and handed out a grand total of 4,809 free books. Among those visited are the four schools that are functioning as meal distribution sites for Redwood City students and their families: Hoover Community School, Henry Ford Elementary School, Roosevelt School and Garfield Community School.
In addition to this outreach, we are happy to announce that the youth services staff will be handing out free Summer Learning Challenge books at the Downtown Library, parking Lot B during our Curbside Pick-up hours. Learn more here:
Look for more good news in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we will see you at our holds and summer learning challenge curbside pick-up!
Stay well,
Derek Wolfgram
