HQ Happenings
Dear UCEA,

Happy Spring! There is still a chill in the air here in Michigan, but the crocuses are starting to break through the ice so I am confident that spring is on the way.

A few important updates on UCEA goings on:

  • The latest UCEA Winter Review is available! It includes the #UCEA22 Presidential address, recognition of the 2022 Award Winners, work from our Centers, policy updates, and more. Please give it a read!

  • We are looking for four new UCEA Associate Directors to partner with Headquarters. These include ADs for Policy and Advocacy, International Initiatives, and Graduate Student Development. There is also a new AD role for Faculty Development. This is a wonderful opportunity to become involved in UCEA and collaborate to support our members. You can find more info on our website and the Winter Review. If you are interested please submit your materials by May 15.
Some important awards updates,
  1. The Excellence in Educational Leadership nominations are due April 15. Be sure to reach out to your member program’s PSR to nominate a leader from your community for this important recognition.
  2. Letters of Intent for the Exemplary Educational Leadership Preparation are due on May 1.
  3. The deadline for the remaining UCEA Faculty Awards is August 25. Our hope is that this extended window will give time for more nominations! If you have a wonderful colleague who is doing important work in their research, teaching, mentoring, and/or is in their early or late career stages, please consider nominating them for one of our awards.
You will also see important Convention 2023 updates below – along with proposal submission due date of May 12. We have a truly wonderful committee working under the leadership of President-Elect Lisa Bass. We are planning for another UCEAwesome Convention in Minneapolis … and don’t let the worry about the weather dissuade you from getting those proposals in!

And for AERA, we are thrilled to welcome the 2023 Clark Scholars and Jackson Scholars to Chicago for their research seminar and mentoring sessions. A special shout out to all the Clark and JSN mentors for making the time to engage with our scholars. See more info below on all our AERA events. It’s going to be a great conference!

See you in the Windy City!

Houston District Takeover

Texas state officials took over Houston Independent School District, the state’s largest school district. The legality and ethics of the takeover are disputed, and evidence shows that takeovers in other states have not always produced better student outcomes.
Principal Turnover

A new report from RAND Corporation, based on surveys from district leaders, finds that principal turnovers increased at a high rate in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. In that study, 90% of districts reported one or more policy changes to address school leader attrition. However, other recent research using data from Texas, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania suggest that turnover numbers during the pandemic were more mixed compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Florida Textbook Changes

Excluding mention of Rosa Parks’ race in a new edition of a Florida social studies textbook is the latest in a series of restrictions on lessons about race and racism in the state. Other recent measures include outright bans on teaching critical race theory and the AP African American Studies course.
ED LEADERSHIP FOREFRONT
With support from The Wallace Foundation, Paul Manna’s recent report explores the role of state leaders in fostering strong partnerships to support the development of high-quality principals. He makes connections across the University Preparation Program Initiative (UPPI) and the ESSA Leadership Learning Community to detail key tools that states can leverage.
