Come to Presbytery This Saturday!: Notes in Transition

Salem Presbytery gathers this Saturday, August 17, at Jamestown Presbyterian Church. We hope all members of presbytery plan to attend, and we urge you to see that each of your churches is fully represented by elder commissioners too. Our participation is one of the ways we honor vows we take on the occasion of our ordination. We will worship, enjoy fellowship, welcomes candidates for ministry, receive new members, honor retiring ministers, and learn about important work committees of our presbytery are doing in mission on behalf of us all.

In addition we will consider a resolution from the session of Bethel Church in McLeansville regarding the church and the issue of abortion as referred by the executive council.

The Nominating Committee will present names for responsible posts, including, in nomination to be our next moderator, the Rev. Paul Sink.

The Implementation Team will report on progress it has made so far as the plan adopted by presbytery last February comes to fruition.

Please see the packet HERE.

We thank our host pastor, the Rev. Jay Smith, and all the members of the Jamestown Church who are already exerting themselves to make us welcome.

Grace and peace,

Steve Scott
Transitional General Presbyter

Open to New Ideas for Your Congregation?

Does your church sometimes feel stale? Are you looking for a little energy?

Salem's Church Growth and Transformation Committee has several solutions for what ails you!

1)      CG&T has prepared resources for "Elders on the Loose," a structured way for churches to look at themselves with fresh eyes by visiting other churches to find and bring back new ideas. Equipped with an easy-to-use worksheet, each church's Session is invited to give their elders a week off from worship to visit other area churches and view them from a newcomer's perspective. This can help inform how welcoming we really are. More information and forms will be available on the Presbytery website following Saturday's Presbytery meeting.

2)      Churches are also invited to participate in "Gospel on the Go," a presbytery-wide pulpit swap" on Sunday, September 29. Participating pastors are encouraged to offer messages of hope, vision, and transformation to their sister church for the day. Churches can be paired either by taking the initiative directly or by being paired through CG&T. Please contact Lee Zehmer to sign your church up or for more information.
Attention Clerks of Session

Good news and more good news! Presbyterian Mission Agency's Research Services group is abandoning the "Clerk's Annual Questionnaire" (CAQ)! You'll remember that the CAQ was the fall survey that asked questions like "what kind of Sunday school curriculum are you using" and "does your church have a committee that focuses some or all of its attention on world or international mission?"

Instead of the CAQ, Research Services may periodically design a short survey on a targeted topic of interest and deliver that to you - in random fashion (not everyone will be asked to participate in every survey). In that vein, you might receive, directly from Research Services, a link to complete a short and easy-to-complete survey on the General Assembly and the Office of the General Assembly. Please make every effort to complete this survey.

If you have any questions, please contact David Vaughan through the link below. To clarify: the Annual Statistical Report and the Salem forms (information and necrology) will still be required! Thank you for your important work!

Opportunities to Serve in Mission Continue on Carolina Coast

What would happen to your home if 40 inches of rain fell on it in 3 days?  Many people in Coastal Carolina Presbytery found out last fall during Hurricane Florence.  Water falling from above and rising from below put many people out of their homes, and many remain displaced, particularly in Pender County in southeast NC.

Working through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington continues to offer housing for volunteer groups to help repair and rebuild these homes.  Our facility has 8 individual air-conditioned rooms with cots topped by 4-inch foam mattresses. We can accommodate groups of up to 25 volunteers. Volunteers with construction skills are especially needed, but anyone with a good back and a loving heart is valuable, too.

We have some wonderful fall and winter dates open, and our work partner (NC Baptists on Mission) has a one-year waiting list of homes needing repair.  For more details contact Allison Cockrill at the link below. To schedule a trip, contact Eden Carroll at the link below. Thank you!

Concert Opportunity at Franklin Church

Franklin Presbyterian Church, in Salisbury, invites the Salem Presbytery family to join them to hear Reggie Saddler & Family Band in concert on Sunday, August 18, at 5:00 p.m., with a meal following the concert. Reggie Saddler is the former guitarist with Frankie Vallie; he traveled worldwide with the Bill Gaither Family. A love offering will be received. The church is located at 280 Franklin Church Drive, Salisbury. For more information call 704-633-2292.
Salem Online Resources

Have you acquainted yourself with our online directory? Please take advantage of this handy resource, to which you have access through the Salem Presbytery website. As our staff grows smaller, and as fewer are available to answer the phone, you will find this directory easier to use (password = clemmons3950) than calling the presbytery to get phone numbers and email addresses of committee members or others you want to be in touch with.
