A Word from the Pastor

July 7, 2023

As you have undoubtedly noticed, we have been doing many repairs to the church and grounds in recent months. Some of the problems we are correcting became obvious with the large amount of rain we experienced earlier this year. But we have been chasing certain leaks in the church for many years and they have become much worse as a result of the rain. While removing the bees in the church tower earlier this year, many additional structural problems became obvious. It seems that as soon as we correct one problem, another one is uncovered. I believe that it is good stewardship to keep on top of the upkeep of our buildings and property. All the repairs completed thus far have cost the parish over $171,000.00.

The latest problem uncovered involves the windows and doors of the church. In order to prevent further damage to the windows and doors, as well as the walls around them, we need to replace the frames (one by one) and add a weather-protective overhang for each window and door. This will cost around $23,000 (just a little less than the amount we receive in one week’s collection!).

Also during the month of July, we will be doing some needed repairs to our parking lots. Some places need major repairs, other areas just need to be resealed to prolong the life of the asphalt. I am grateful for the collaboration of our parish school in making those repairs. We are making every effort to make the parking lot repairs on weekdays and not interfere with our weekend Masses. I will let you know the exact dates as soon as they are confirmed. Also, before the next rainy season, the roof of the parish center will need to be replaced.

These are all very necessary repairs. To postpone them any longer would undoubtedly increase the cost. Paying to fix these problems is slowly eating away at our financial reserves. Even with good financial management, necessary repairs can eat away at our savings.

I bring all this to your attention so that you can understand the dilemma we are facing. In a time of worldwide inflation, especially with expensive construction costs, we are walking a fine line between necessary upkeep and repair on the one hand and limited financial resources on the other.

I ask you to consider what you might be able to do to help us in this time of increasing costs. Undoubtedly, you know this dilemma in the budget for your own home or business. Be assured that I am very grateful for whatever you can do to increase your donation to the parish. You can direct your donations to our Construction and Repair Fund (gold envelopes) or do so through our online giving portal.

Thank you and God bless you.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

Eucharistic Ministers Needed

Our parish is in need of more Eucharistic Ministers. Some did not return after the pandemic. Some have moved away. Some just felt a need “to retire.” I am asking each of our parishioners to prayerfully consider an invitation from the Lord to share in this ministry.

Please consider serving as a Special Minister of Holy Communion in our parish. This Eucharistic Revival Year is a good time to consider if He may be calling you to share in the Eucharist by serving in this ministry.

This weekend, there will be a table on the patio at which some Eucharistic ministers will be available to answer your questions about this ministry. You will even be able to sign up if you feel called. Or call Joni or Fr. Ron at the parish office.

Eucharistic Revival Corner

Here is a homily given by Fr. Peter McGuire as a part of our diocesan Eucharistic Initiative in 2021. It would be good to listen to it again as a part of the National Eucharistic Revival.

Annual Mission Appeal

Next weekend, July 15-16, we will welcome Sr. Teslin Joseph of the Sacred Heart Sisters from India for the annual Cooperative Mission Appeal. The major activities of the Indian Province are schools, parish activities, medical and counseling. One of the specializations is to treat and work with mentally and psychologically ill and challenged people.

You will have the opportunity to help the Sisters by donating to the second collection at al Masses next weekend. Special envelopes are available at the doors of the church. Thank you for supporting the worldwide mission of the Church.

  2. What is a catechism?
  3. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is divided into four parts. What is the theme or subject matter of each part?
  4. Have there been previous catechisms?
  5. Is the Catechism simply a list of doctrinal formulations?

Gospel Reading

Matthew 11:25-30

Jesus prays in thanks to God, who has revealed himself to the lowly.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel comes after a discourse in which Jesus reproaches people who have witnessed his mighty deeds yet still lack belief. In this context, today’s Gospel explains the reason for this unbelief and reveals what is necessary for faith. Today’s Gospel also continues to enhance our understanding of discipleship as last week’s Gospel did.

Jesus first prays in thanksgiving to God who has made himself known to Jesus’ disciples. He praises God who has made himself known to the “little ones” and not to the wise and learned. As in other recent readings from Matthew’s Gospel, a contrast is made here between the unbelieving Pharisees, who are wise and learned, and the faithful disciples, tax collectors, and sinners with whom Jesus keeps company.

The second part of this reading calls to our attention the unity between the Father and the Son. God has made himself known through Jesus, and in knowing Jesus, we come to know the Father. In Jesus’ life and in his person, God reveals himself to us.

In the concluding sentences of today’s Gospel, Jesus’ teaching is again contrasted to the teaching of the Pharisees. This common theme of Matthew’s Gospel probably reflects tension that existed between Jesus and the Pharisees and between the Pharisees and the community of Christians for whom Matthew wrote. Pharisaic Judaism became the predominant form of Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem about 70 A.D. Here that tension is expressed as alternative paths of holiness. The careful observance of the Mosaic law taught by the Pharisees could be experienced by some as difficult and burdensome. In contrast, Jesus’ way of holiness is presented as uncomplicated and even restful.

Scatter Sunshine

Listen to The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square sing, “Scatter Sunshine,” aired on April 30, 2023. The lyrics are subtitled so can follow its upbeat and hopeful message.

Let the Little Ones Come

to Me!

In the summer months we offer Liturgy of the Word for Children during the 9:00 am Mass. Children ages 5-9 that attend Mass with their family have the opportunity to hear the Word of God in language they can understand and reflect on in their own words.

Following the Opening Prayer of the Mass, the presider calls forth the children, and we send them along with the adult catechist to the church basement classroom. The catechist will proclaim the readings from the Lectionary for Masses with Children, a translation that is more comprehensible to young children and approved by the US Catholic Conference of Bishops. The children will discuss how to share the good news with others.

They will be brought back to their family at the time of the Preparation of the Gifts to continue the celebration of the Eucharist with the entire assembly.
