Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel comes after a discourse in which Jesus reproaches people who have witnessed his mighty deeds yet still lack belief. In this context, today’s Gospel explains the reason for this unbelief and reveals what is necessary for faith. Today’s Gospel also continues to enhance our understanding of discipleship as last week’s Gospel did.

Jesus first prays in thanksgiving to God who has made himself known to Jesus’ disciples. He praises God who has made himself known to the “little ones” and not to the wise and learned. As in other recent readings from Matthew’s Gospel, a contrast is made here between the unbelieving Pharisees, who are wise and learned, and the faithful disciples, tax collectors, and sinners with whom Jesus keeps company.

The second part of this reading calls to our attention the unity between the Father and the Son. God has made himself known through Jesus, and in knowing Jesus, we come to know the Father. In Jesus’ life and in his person, God reveals himself to us.

In the concluding sentences of today’s Gospel, Jesus’ teaching is again contrasted to the teaching of the Pharisees. This common theme of Matthew’s Gospel probably reflects tension that existed between Jesus and the Pharisees and between the Pharisees and the community of Christians for whom Matthew wrote. Pharisaic Judaism became the predominant form of Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem about 70 A.D. Here that tension is expressed as alternative paths of holiness. The careful observance of the Mosaic law taught by the Pharisees could be experienced by some as difficult and burdensome. In contrast, Jesus’ way of holiness is presented as uncomplicated and even restful.

Family Masses This Sunday



We will continue our monthly Family Mass during the summer months. The next Family Mass will this Sunday, July 9 at 9:00 am. As always, the homily will address young children and we try to create a family-friendly environment. Plan to join us!

We are here to support parents in forming their children in the Catholic Faith and engage in our parish community where we worship and grow together in faith. We offer weekly classes for preschool through 8th grade and preparation for the sacraments for children in grades 1 through 8.

Let the Little Ones Come

to Me!

In the summer months we offer Liturgy of the Word for Children during the 9:00 am Mass. Children ages 5-9 that attend Mass with their family have the opportunity to hear the Word of God in language they can understand and reflect on in their own words. 

Following the Opening Prayer of the Mass, the presider calls forth the children, and we send them along with the adult catechist to the church basement classroom. The catechist will proclaim the readings from the Lectionary for Masses with Children, a translation that is more comprehensible to young children and approved by the US Catholic Conference of Bishops. The children will discuss how to share the good news with others. 

They will be brought back to their family at the time of the Preparation of the Gifts to continue the celebration of the Eucharist with the entire assembly.

Recuerdo de ver escuchado este texto bíblico en el grupo de oración de nuestra parroquia hace unos años atrás, “Vengan a mí, todos los que están fatigados y agobiados por la carga y yo les daré alivio.” Recuerdo que me sentí alegre, conforme, aliviado, porque Dios me esta diciendo a mí, que “Yo estoy aquí para ayudarte. Yo sé lo que cargas en tu corazón que no te deja ser libre. No te preocupes, porque yo soy un Dios lleno de amor y misericordia. Dame lo que estas cargando”. A saber, que Dios estaba a mi lado era una bendición y fuerza para mí, porque no estaba sólo. Comparto estas palabras con ustedes, porque en este XIV Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario, en el Evangelio de San Mateo, Dios nos esta diciendo a todos, “Dame lo que te duele, lo que te pesa y lo que cargas. Dame tus pecados y tentaciones, dame lo que más te duele. Yo estoy contigo”. Y creo que estas palabras de Dios son importantes para nosotros hoy en día. A veces necesitamos ser recordados que Dios es amor. Dios no castiga al que le falla, Dios no sólo es para las personas buenas y que nunca se tropiezan y caen. Este tipo de persona perfecta no existe. Dios está aquí para nosotros, los pecadores, los enfermos, los que sienten abandonados y sin dignidad. Levante los ojos, levante sú corazón, allí está tú Señor que te dice, “Vengan a mi todos los están fatigados…”
