Dear Friends,
I write with joy to announce the next Trinity Pilgrimage: The Celtic Saints of Ireland, October 4–13, 2027.
The saints of the Celtic church have long held my imagination. Patrick, a former slave who returned to the people who had taken him. Brigid, whose generosity was so extravagant her community despaired of the household accounts. Kevin, who went into a valley in the Wicklow Mountains looking for solitude and found a community gathering around him instead. These were not tidy people. They founded their monasteries beside wells and rivers and mountain passes, and they trusted that God could be met at the far edge of the known world as surely as at its center.
Our ten days will take us to those places. We will begin in Dublin — Christ Church and St. Patrick’s Cathedrals, and the Book of Kells at Trinity College — then travel south to Glendalough and St. Kevin’s monastery, west to Kildare and St. Brigid’s Well, and on to the Rock of Cashel. From there we cross into Northern Ireland: Armagh and its twin cathedrals, and Sunday morning worship at Down Cathedral, where we will share the Eucharist with the local congregation before visiting Patrick’s grave. We finish in Belfast, with a day at the Giant’s Causeway and an evening of music in a local pub.
This fall, I will teach a Sunday Forum class on the Celtic Saints. It is designed as preparation for the pilgrimage, but it stands on its own, and everyone is welcome whether or not you plan to come to Ireland.
