The Annular Eclipse is Almost Here!!!

Interested in the upcoming Annular Eclipse?

Comfort Public Library has TWO astrophysicists coming for this once-in-a-generation event. On Friday, October 13, at 4:30pm, NASA Astrophysicist James Rhoads, will tell us about the following day's Eclipse as well as the next NASA space telescope being built, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.

THEN--on the actual Annular Eclipse Day, Saturday, October 14, Astrophysicist Anne Holland from the Space Science Institute will be here to narrate the events happening during the Eclipse itself. Her organization, along with NASA and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, has donated all the telescopes, sunoculars, sunspotters, and yes, the ECLIPSE GLASSES, that we will use that day to view the Eclipse here on the Library's Patio. There will be snacks and eclipse-related activities as well. The fun starts at 10:00 am; it's definitely not to be missed!!

What’s New for October 2023

With a change of seasons, thoughts turn to dinosaurs, talking dogs, virtual games, and then, of course, to the upcoming eclipses. What a great time to explore some exciting and informative younger-than-adult books on all those things!

·      TOTALITY! AN ECLIPSE GUIDE IN RHYME AND SCIENCE by Jeffrey Bennett → how to prepare for both events ; paths of totality for world-wide eclipses ; how eclipses happen

·      READY PLAYER TWO (Ready Player, 2) by Ernest Cline → virtual games ; dystopian society ; new villains ; who will survive?

·      SCHOZZER & TATERTOES TAKE A HIKE! By Rick Stromoski → two canine friends ; epic journey to visit Tatertoes’s mother ; “nose spiders” and other new experiences in the forest

·      RAPTORS OF PARADISE (Supersaurs, 1) by Jay Jay Burridge → a world where dinosaurs survived ; missing grandmothers ; unanswered questions ; remote Indonesian islands

"Comfort Zone" Book Club

This month's selection was a 2023 Texas Great Read Adult Selection: West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. An emotional, rousing novel inspired by the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America.

“Few true friends have I known and two were giraffes…”

Come join us at Hill Country WineWorks on Saturday, Nov 11 at 10:30 am for an always fascinating discussion.

KIM'S CORNER

October is here, and I am excited about the Library’s new renovation. The contractor is finishing up with a few minor details, the staff is planning where everything is going in the new and improved area, and we are planning on closing the Library down for November to get all the books back on the shelves. We will send out a notice for the grand opening at the end of November.

Until then, I would like to thank my Board, staff, supporters, patrons, Friends of the Library, and volunteers for supporting the Library. This Library is a beautiful collage of everything this community has brought. Our mission is to provide a broad range of library services of the highest quality to our community. We tried to listen to and meet your needs with this renovation, and I am very proud of what we accomplished.

Thank you to all who supported us with the Taste of Comfort. This fundraiser is a huge undertaking, and none of it could not happen without the support of this community and businesses. Thank you! We had a very successful fundraiser, which helped us meet our budget needs.

Sincerely,

Kimberli Evans
