Our 2019 Summer Challenge is almost here! This year's Summer Challenge launches later this month and our theme is A Universe of Stories. Visit fcpl.org/summer or stop by your local library May 15 to get started. In addition to reading and exploring your community, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy family-friendly, space-themed events at your local library throughout the summer. Visit fcpl.org/universe for the details.

If you haven't tried reading an ebook with CloudLibrary yet, now is a great time to check it out. Our CloudLibrary app will be updated on May 6 with a new, easier-to-use interface. You'll be able to enjoy one-click access to checked out titles, improved search functionality, and new author and series links. If you already love and use CloudLibrary, be sure to update to version 4.1 on your Android or iOS device next week.

And finally, we're excited to welcome Neil Gaiman, this season's final speaker for the Frederick Speaker Series, on Thursday, May 9, to a sold-out crowd. Thanks to everyone who attended the Frederick Speaker Series this year. We especially appreciate those who attended a VIP Meet & Greet with our speakers and supported children's programming at FCPL.

See you around the library!
James Kelly.

2018 Frederick County Spelling Bee winner Charles Millard pictured second from left with first-place trophy.
Charles times two! We have a repeat winner. The annual Frederick County Spelling Bee did not disappoint and culminated with Frederick Classical Charter School eighth grader, Charles Millard, taking home the trophy...again! The second place trophy went to St. John Regional Catholic School student Nicole Chowdhury. Both Millard and Chowdhury are no strangers to the bee. Millard won the bee last year and has been a speller the last four years of the bee. This is Chowdhury's third time competing at the Frederick County Spelling Bee.

The bee began with 28 elementary and middle school spellers and culminated with Millard correctly spelling "minify" in round 20. Millard moves on to represent Frederick County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May. He will join other students from across the United States and around the world in competing in this prestigious event.

Millard's Spelling Bee prize includes hotel accommodations and $1,200 to cover transportation and other expenses. Also included in the event prizes are a Webster's Third New International Dictionary awarded to the winner and a Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition for the runner-up. Both prizes were awarded by Merriam-Webster. Door prize drawings were held for spellers and the schools' alternates.

Congratulations to all our spellers and especially to Charles! We are excited to have you represent Frederick County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee and wish you the best of luck!

The Frederick County Spelling Bee is generously underwritten by Frederick County Public Libraries, The Frederick News-Post, and Merriam-Webster.
Screen-FREE Week Frederick

FCPL is partnering with Screen-FREE Week Frederick to highlight the myriad of ways to play and learn without screens this spring. Between now and May 5, join participants around the world and unplug from digital entertainment and spend that free time playing, reading, daydreaming, creating, exploring, and connecting with family and friends in your community.

FCPL offers many books that can jump start your screen-free activities, from learning to play a new game to exploring the outdoors. Or, check out the list of FCPL's events for kids, teens, adults, and all ages at fcpl.org/screenfree. You can also visit Screen-FREE Week Frederick's Facebook page to see events happening across Frederick County.

Ready for Summer Book Campaign

WOW! Over 400 books have already been purchased! Help us reach our goal and give the gift of reading today.

The end of the school year and the start of the summer can be exciting for many kids. But for some, this transition can be a difficult one and the start of a decline in important academic skills that will continue throughout the summer .

Help prevent the "summer slide" and ensure that kids are learning all year long. You can put books into the hands of Frederick County children. Support Ready for Summer, a collaborative campaign hosted by FCPL, Blessings in a Backpack, the Literacy Council, and Curious Iguana .

Thanks to the generous donations already received, we've met our goal to provide pre-kindergarten books. And with your help, we can provide books for local kindergarteners and first graders. Learn more at fcpl.org.
Your Gift Creates Opportunity

Frederick County Public Libraries is constantly evolving, and the resources we provide can be life-changing. It is only with the support of our donors, people like you, that we offer the best possible public library services. When you give to FCPL, you support the library, but you also support our community.

Each gift to the Library's Greatest Need Fund makes Frederick County even better by providing the funding we need to respond to new opportunities and increase access to materials, programs, technology, and learning.

Can we count on you to invest in the library and Frederick with a gift today? Click the button below to make a gift.
