As temperatures drop in Philadelphia — America's birthplace and America's Flagship's current berth — the SS United States continues to wait patiently on the waters of the Delaware River. Since 1996, this magnificent ship has weathered countless storms, searing heat, and brutal winter winds. But, of course, the Big U was built to withstand far worse.

Despite surface-level signs of age, she is still structurally sound. And thanks to her excellent design, as well as the dedicated caretakers who tend to her needs, she remains safely afloat — serving as a breathtaking, soaring symbol of American innovation, imagination, and determination.

Above perhaps all else, the SS United States is a beacon of national unity: a reminder of the great things we can accomplish when we work together. Know that your continued willingness to spread the word about this " Lady in Waiting " is not only greatly appreciated, but 100% necessary.

As RXR Realty explores potential options for redevelopment of the ship, the Conservancy is hard at work raising awareness and funds for the future of the SS United States , while continually expanding our curatorial efforts .

"This ship represents the can-do spirit and other qualities that helped build the great nation whose name she bears on her hull. The SS  United States  is the embodiment of this country and must be preserved." — Christopher Argeson, Wayne, NJ

Jim Palmer is a longtime advocate for the SS United States — as well as a valued friend and supporter of the Conservancy — whose love of this iconic vessel dates back to his first boyhood glimpse of the ship in 1952. He previously wrote about his enduring affection for the Big U in a touching piece for our blog .

Recently, Jim reached out to us again, this time to share his memory of an encounter with a woman who'd traveled on the SS United States during its maiden voyage. CLICK HERE to read this amazing story.

Ever since she first set sail, artists of all stripes have looked to the SS United States as a source of inspiration.

America's Flagship makes a memorable appearance in Becoming Mrs. Lewis: The Improbable Love Story of Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis — the latest novel from New York Times best-selling author Patti Callahan.

Becoming Mrs. Lewis tells the story of the real-life romance between C.S. Lewis — the beloved children’s fantasy writer who dreamed up Narnia — and the woman who would be his wife, the celebrated American poet and novelist Joy Davidman.

"I didn’t know much at all about the ship until I started this book and became quite enchanted with her," says author Patti Callahan. "She was a beauty, and it’s thrilling to know she may be refurbished.
"I think Joy would love knowing that the ship that took her to England the first time and changed her life is one that may be lovingly restored."

Help Us Save America's Flagship!
Though the SS United States remains afloat thanks to the combined, generous efforts of countless supporters, volunteers, and advisors from all corners of the globe, the actual staff of the SS United States Conservancy is both small and extremely dedicated.

Since last November, Kevin McElvaney has proudly served as the Conservancy's Communications and Outreach Associate — a position that focuses largely on amplifying the digital presence of America's Flagship. That means his responsibilities include updating our blog, overseeing our social media , and editing this newsletter.
