A Note from Mrs. Ryan
Dear Parents,

There are many special Advent traditions that will help you as a family remain in the spirit of the season in the midst of the rampant commercialism generated by Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and all of the other Christmas buying frenzy. If your family does not already have an Advent Wreath, Jesse Tree, or Advent Calendar around which to center prayer, I invite you to check out this web sites for ideas.

Another quintessential Catholic sacramental is the nativity scene. At St. Rose we set up our various nativity scenes at the beginning of Advent. Among the faculty and staff we have a friendly dispute every year about whether or not the Baby Jesus should be present in the nativity scene during Advent or be put away until Christmas. My grandmother always taught me that Baby Jesus should be put away until Christmas Eve, since the Advent season is about waiting for his arrival. We have kept that tradition in my family with the youngest child getting the honor of placing the Baby Jesus in the manger just before bedtime on Christmas Eve. The tradition of other faculty members is that, of course Baby Jesus should be displayed because Jesus is always with us. Of course neither tradition is wrong. The whole idea of the nativity scene was begun by St. Francis of Assisi in the thirteenth century as an instructional device to teach people about the infancy narratives in the Gospels. It remains a great teaching tool to this day. Little things like allowing your children to choose whether to have the Baby Jesus displayed during Advent can lead to meaningful discussions about the spiritual meaning of Christmas.

Parking Lot Safety
Safety First depends on your cooperation!
Please remember, and tell all those in your family who drive onto our campus, to please drive safely!

Some important safety reminders:
  1. Be patient. Drive slow. Be kind. Do not impede traffic flow or others.
  2. If your child goes to tutorial, do not get in the pick up line before 3:10 pm. Do not sit in the traffic circle waiting. Circle around back in line to keep traffic flow moving.
  3. DO NOT leave your car unattended in the traffic circle during drop off or pick up. Stay in your car and move as soon as your child gets in or out. If you have office business, please park in a designated parking spot.
  4. Morning drop off: everyone is in a hurry it seems to get to where they need to go. Please do not speed through campus. Do not pass unlawfully or unsafely. Be patient. Plan accordingly.
  5. If a staff member asks you to move your car or to park, they are doing what is in the best interests of everyone and to keep traffic moving. Please be respectful and do what they ask of you.
We thank you for your cooperation and appreciate your partnership in keeping everyone safe out there!
