Sharing the Heart of God from the Heart of Downtown Macon
| |
|
As we travel together during this Lenten season, we will encounter God in all of God’s glory through the ordinary: ordinary people, ordinary objects, and ordinary grace.
On March 5, @ 9:30a.m., we will gather together as a combined Sunday school class to learn how prayer beads can be just another tool to help us connect with God and go deeper in our prayer lives. Please grab your coffee and donut in the Atrium and head directly to the Fellowship Hall for this great experience.
What are prayer beads?
Prayer beads can help you focus while praying. They are something that you can hold onto. In a sense, they help to ground you and give you a path to follow during your prayer. They also provide structure and comfort. There is no wrong or right way to use prayer beads. You may just want to hold them and finger the beads while you pray. Or you may want to follow the pattern of the beads, praying a specific prayer for each bead. Do what works for you.
The earliest personal use of prayer beads was in 3200 B.C. by the ancient Egyptians. Since then, all major religions have used beads to count prayers, including Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims (while Jews don’t use beads, they do use knotted fringe on their shawls, called Tzitzit, to count their prayers). Interestingly, the modern English word “bead” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon “bede,” meaning “prayer.”
There are many types of prayer beads: Anglican & Protestant prayer beads have 33 beads, while Catholic rosaries have 60 beads and Orthodox rosaries have 100 beads.
During our time together you will also learn what the specific beads mean as your designing your own set of prayer beads. These beads will be yours to keep, which will be another tool to connect you with God.
I hope to see you!
In Christ’s Love,
Elisa

Second Sunday Serve!
Sunday, March 12 after worship
For our next Second Sunday Serve, we have two exciting opportunities! First, we will be supporting the United Methodist Committee on Relief by packing hygiene kits, which provide basic necessities to those suffering from disasters. Between now and March 12, we are inviting Mulberrians to give a special offering directed to purchasing the goods that go into this kit.
We are also providing CPR training! Beth Tripp and a friend have graciously offered to teach the class, which will begin after lunch and last approximately 2 hours. The cost will be $10, and participants will receive certification through the Red Cross.
