Coming soon: New Canvas

It’s almost here! The spring/summer issue of Canvas is scheduled to publish April 28. Pick up copies at newsstands in galleries, restaurants, bars and libraries throughout Northeast Ohio, or follow @CanvasCLE on Twitter to be among the first to know when you can access the digital edition of Canvas. April 21 | 5 to 8 p.m. | Summit Artspace
Attend the opening reception for “SA Period,” a show that will focus on the work of the professional artists who call the Summit Artspace community art centers in Akron and Barberton home. The reception will take place on the second floor lobby of the Akron location at 140 E. Market St. The exhibition, which runs until May 20, is in the first floor gallery.

April 21 | 6 to 9 p.m. | Heights Arts
Heights Arts presents the second iteration of its well received exhibition, “Emergent,” which shines a light on artists who have recently graduated from area art programs. First presented in 2015, “Emergent” 2017 celebrates the strength of the Northeast Ohio region as a training ground for the great artists of tomorrow. Selected this year were 12 artists who create in a variety of media from a list of institutions including the Cleveland Institute of Art, Kent State University, the University of Akron and Baldwin Wallace University: Meghan Calvert, ceramics; Amber Ford, photography; Jessica Howard, printmaking; Erin Jesson, mixed media; Jacob Koestler, photography; Samantha Konet, painting; Mike Lombardy, mixed media; Nathan Prebonick, painting; Rachel Shelton, drawing; Maia Stern, glass; Grace Summanen, painting; and Nikki Woods, painting.

April 26 | 6 p.m. | Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage
Join the Maltz Museum in celebrating the finalists in its annual Stop the Hate Youth Speak Out and Youth Sing Out contests. Students will share personal stories of discrimination and ways they plan to help encourage the end of bullying, intolerance and indifference in their community. Student and participating school winners of $100,000 in scholarships and prizes will be announced.

April 28 | 7 to 10 p.m. | Cleveland History Center
Stop by the opening reception for “Wow Factor: 150 Years of Collecting Bold Clothes,” which showcases 15 decades of fashionable, inspiring Clevelanders and their style. “Wow Factor” is the ability to inspire feelings of wonder and awe. In fashion, these emotions are triggered by beauty, craftsmanship, rarity and humor. The exhibition highlights the Western Reserve Historical Society’s outstanding collection of show-stopping clothing and accessories made by Cleveland designers as well as international designers such as Christian Dior and Carolina Herrera.

April 29 | 6:30 to 10 p.m. | Cleveland Public Theatre
CPT’s Station Hope is a jubilant community event that celebrates Cleveland’s social justice history and explores contemporary struggles for freedom and equity. Engage with more than 250 artists as they envision, interrogate and seek out hope on the grounds of Cleveland’s first authenticated Underground Railroad site, St. John’s Episcopal Church. Audiences explore the historic properties while viewing works of theater, music, storytelling and dance inspired by the most important issues of our time.

Several area exhibitions are nearing the ends of their runs.
