The Metaphysics
of Mourning

Grief and loss cuts to the core of everything that defines us, and exposes places in our relationships, belief systems, family structures and social values that have been crying out for illumination and healing.

It can be difficult to imagine mourning a severe loss as anything but a terrible, life-shattering experience. But if we consider the possibility that tragedy and upheaval offer us an invitation awakening, vast new horizons of spiritual growth are opened up to us.

Grief shakes us loose from our spiritual lethargy and creates an opening in us that is highly receptive to growth if we recognize the tools and choose to do the work. If we nurture that opening, if we honor it and work with it, we can discover previously unimagined worlds of wisdom, and choose enlightenment over annihilation. Click HERE for more on this presentation.

God: A New Story

The theology most of us were taught as children presents God as a “being” who displays a range of human characteristics that include anger, jealously, and violence on one end, with love and compassion on the other. This god is perceived as a father figure that resides in a realm separate from our world, and from that location “he” manages everything in the universe. We are taught that we can earn the favor of this god by behaving in certain ways, and that we can earn his wrath by displeasing him.

In this presentation we will explore how this belief system originated, how it became popular, and why it is often a source of spiritual pain rather than comfort. Click HERE for more on this program.

Mini-Workshop
Conscious Grieving: Turning Loss
into Light

In this presentation, you'll become familiar with multi-cultural customs and spiritual healing tools that exist at the intersection of spirituality and psychology. We'll explore how Western knowledge about bereavement has evolved over the last several decades, with a focus on contributions from Buddhism, Shamanism and ancient Pagan traditions.

You will learn how the symbolic elements of ritual can assist with the release of emotional pain, and the evening will conclude with a heart-healing ceremony to mark our acceptance of impermanence and our innate ability to transform pain into power.

Interfaith Conversations
with the Dying
and the Bereaved

For chaplains, nurses, social workers, hospice volunteers,
physicians and family caregivers

As compassionate professionals or devoted family caregivers, we may at times be invited into conversations with patients or family members that addresses religious views on death and the afterlife. Meeting people "where they are" in terms of belief systems is a delicate art that requires patience, wisdom and skill. How do we offer compassionate listening and support for beliefs that may not resonate with our own? How can we honor the other person's reality fully and lovingly, without imposing our own views and biases?
