Cal State LA Gives Back: A day of service, a community of gratitude

The Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good extends its appreciation to all who participated in the Cal State LA Gives Back! community service event held April 18 at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in the City of Industry. This year, 31 members of the Cal State LA community—including six staff, one faculty member, and 24 students—collectively contributed 155 volunteer hours and helped assemble 2,072 boxes of food. Commencement ceremonies to take place May 19-21

Cal State LA will celebrate thousands of graduating students in the Class of 2025 at Commencement on May 19-21. The nine college-based ceremonies will be held in the historic Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Graduating students will have their names called while crossing the stage. Commencement will also feature three honorary doctoral candidates: Ken Jeong, an actor, comedian, producer, and AAPI community advocate; Jo Koy, one of today’s premiere stand-up comedians; and Kevin Xu, biotech industry leader and philanthropist. The ceremonies will be streamed live online. The detailed schedule is posted on the Commencement website.

Student Success stories share accomplishments of 8 graduating students

Cal State LA’s Newsroom is highlighting eight outstanding members of the Class of 2025 in its annual Student Success feature stories. The scholars were nominated by their respective colleges and include undergraduates Jarenni Ambriz, Tyler Kom, Joseph Kunkle, and Lara Tseng; and graduate students Brandon Laurent, Rebekah Reyes, Laura To, and Arpit Vaishya. All eight students will be participating in Commencement at the Shrine Auditorium.

Applications now open for new Fellowship in Transgender Studies

Cal State LA is now accepting applications for a new Fellowship in Transgender Studies, designed to support incoming master’s degree-level students from any department who are interested in conducting research in trans studies. The fellowship offers a $5,000 annual stipend, hands-on research experience with faculty, and a paid graduate assistantship at $22 per hour. Funded by the Trans Studies Consortium of Los Angeles, the fellowship aims to foster academic inquiry and community engagement in transgender studies. Interested applicants must submit materials to Talia Bettcher by the deadline of May 30 at 5 p.m. PDT. 

Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs welcomes new executive director

The Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs welcomes Mike Bonin as the new executive director this month. A former member of the Los Angeles City Council, Bonin brings decades of public service experience to Cal State LA, where he will help advance civic engagement, leadership, and equity across California.

College to host 3D-Printed Fixed Wing Aircraft Competition

The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology will host the 3rd Annual CSU 3D-Printed Fixed-Wing Aircraft Competition on Saturday, May 31, at the Jesse Owens Track and Field. Come cheer on the Golden Eagles as they compete with student teams from other colleges and universities. The flight competition plans to start around 9:30 a.m. after the competition eligibility evaluation. Find more details on the competition website.

Luckman Gallery features an exhibit on ‘(in)visible flows: water and light streams in Poaceae family’

The Luckman Gallery is hosting an exhibition, (in)visible flows: water and light streams in Poaceae family, that features the art and science behind more-than-human systems. This exhibit is curated by Antía Iglesias and Marion Boisseaux. The exhibit will be on display until June 7, 2025. Visit the Luckman Gallery’s webpage for more information.

Sign up for Mental Health First Aid Training

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Mental Health First Aid Training this summer. This program teaches participants how to assist someone experiencing a crisis. Participants learn risk factors and warning signs of serious and developing mental health problems, how to talk with a person who might be experiencing a mental health problem, and strategies to help identify the next best steps. Please register online for the June 27 training session before June 12 and the July 25 training session before July 10.

Train with leading bioscience experts in LA BioStart boot camp

The next LA BioStart Bioscience Entrepreneurs Boot Camp, a five-week intensive training program offered through Cal State LA, will take place from July 15 to August 14. Emerging bioscience entrepreneurs will work with leading bioscience executives and industry experts for rapid training in business fundamentals, bioscience knowledge, and leadership skills. Counseling services available for campus community

Employees may find counseling assistance through the Employee Assistance Program, LifeMatters, by calling 1-800-367-7474 or visiting the LifeMatters website. Cal State LA’s company password is GOEAGLES. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) also provides services to students throughout the semester. Counselors will be available to address issues such as anxiety management, emotional wellness, mindfulness, and more. For details, call 323-343-3314 or visit the CAPS website.
