Plan For Spring & Beyond at the Newcomb Campus

Faculty, Staff, and Students: it's a perfect time to think about planning a field course at ESF's Newcomb Campus for spring, summer, and beyond. Facilities include bunkhouses, a dining center, efficiency cabins, and research, education, and meeting space. In addition to physical assets, the education, guest services, and research staff can help plan your course, provide logistics support, and get access to 85-plus years of long-term Adirondack Ecological Center monitoring and data. If you’re thinking about a trip, reach out early to begin planning and consider bringing your class, club, or organization here during the winter. The science doesn’t stop when the snow starts.

Please reach out to Ann-Marie O'Donnell, guest services coordinator, 518-582-4551 x2208, and Jake O'Connell, in the Office of Experiential Learning and Outreach, x2213.

ESF Bee Campus: Year-End Bee Inventory Highlights

ESF Bee Campus, the College's chapter of the national Bee Campus USA program, unveiled the results of its year-end bee inventory. Dedicated to creating native pollinator habitats, Bee Campus engages the campus community through its citizen science project on iNaturalist, where participants upload photos of pollinators spotted on campus.

This year, Bee Campus expanded its efforts by conducting formal surveys. Students collected bee specimens from spring through fall, which were then identified under the microscope by Pollinator Ecologist Molly Jacobson.

The survey revealed an impressive 68 bee species at ESF's Syracuse campus—approximately 15% of New York state's bee biodiversity. Among them are not only common urban species but also rare specialist bees tied to specific native flowers. These findings highlight the importance of creating urban pollinator habitats.

For the full inventory and to join the ESF Pollinators iNaturalist project, and take a moment to learn about ESF Bee Campus. For more information, contact Molly Jacobson.
