May and June are the most common months for ticks to be active around New York. Lyme disease is the most common illness caused by ticks, but Dr. Brian Leydet explains there are others to be aware of this time of year.

BLOOM: The Toxic Threat to the Finger Lakes,”

a new documentary produced by WCNY, features the work of Dr. Kim Schulz and her research on invasive freshwater mussels in the Finger Lakes. The documentary is available to stream on demand. Abby Webster, Ph.D. Student with Dr. Roxanne Razavi, is participating in a panel discussion following the documentary’s screening Wednesday evening at the station.

Recently, the Division of Student Affairs engaged University Police to discuss Emergency Preparedness. Student Affairs was given a presentation by UPD members and were brought back to their office suites for practical exercise and discussion of their plans.

Excelsior Scholarship Application Open for New Applicants

The application for the Excelsior Scholarship for new applicants for the 2023 - 2024 academic year is now open. The Excelsior Scholarship allows eligible full-time students to attend a SUNY or CUNY two-year or four-year college tuition-free. The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation administers the scholarship.


Students from households with federal-adjusted gross incomes up to $125,000 are eligible for an Excelsior Scholarship award. Students must also:

  • Plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY two or four-year college 
  • Complete 30 credits per year towards their program of study (including Summer and Winter terms); and 
  • Be on track to graduate with an associate degree in two years or a bachelor's degree in four years

Applications will be accepted through Aug. 31, 2023.

Nominate Graduate of Distinction

Do you know an outstanding ESF alumnus who deserves to be recognized for their achievements? Nominate them for a 2023 Graduate of Distinction Award, which is presented at December Commencement.

 

The ESF Alumni Association is seeking nominations in three categories:

 

  • Lifetime Achievement - alumni who have or will soon end their active careers
  • Notable Achievement - alumni who are in the early to mid-point of their careers
  • Incipiens Quercu - "beginning oak" for alumni who have graduated within the last decade or so demonstrating their commitment to ESF's environmental stewardship through their professional and/or volunteer work

Nominations can also be submitted on paper to the Graduate of Distinction Award Committee, c/o the Alumni Office, 219 Bray Hall.
