Hello FAMUly!
As the Commencement season comes to an end, I want to congratulate all Spring 2023 graduates, including those who were hooded recently in Orlando during the College of Law’s Hooding Ceremony. The 100 graduates of the Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law listened attentively as keynote speaker Judge Faye Allen, Ninth Judicial Circuit, called them to greatness on Saturday, May 13. Judge Allen reminded graduates that great people attended the College of Law when it was founded in Tallahassee in 1949; there were great people who led the charge to re-establish the law school in Orlando; and the current graduates are compelled to be the legends of the future.

The 2023 Spring Commencement season was quite an uplifting experience.
Now imagine the magnified experience as four sets of twins were among the spring graduates. Then there’s football defensive lineman Jolan Gilley who accomplished his goal of obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Health Sciences on May 5. The Tallahassee native completed his degree with a 3.39 grade point average (GPA), the highest of the Rattler football team’s graduating seniors.Graduation is always a special time not only for the students who have reached this milestone in their lives, but also for all of those in their support system who helped them along the way. Congratulations to you, too.

Speaking of Commencement, I had the distinct honor of speaking at the Spring 2023 College of Arts and Sciences Master’s and Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony at my alma mater Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. It was very special for Sharon and me to return to where we first met. I often say she was the best thing that happened to me while I was there and, subsequently we’ve been married for 38 years. Oh my how the Wash U campus has changed since we were there.

A big shout out to Trustee Michael Dubose who added the Dubose Family name to the School of Business and Industry’s (SBI) illustrious Big Board recently. Trustee Dubose and his wife, Elizabeth, donated a $100,000 endowment for scholarships for students in SBI, which earned them the Dubose Family plaque on the SBI Big Board.
I am excited about our historic partnership with Google and fellow HBCUs, which will help produce the next generation of leaders and innovators in information technology and computer science. FAMU has four named Google endowed computer science and computer engineering professors and two Google student scholars as part of our push to enhance academic and research discovery and attain Carnegie Research 1 status.
Congratulations to junior broadcast journalism student Lawrence Goss who has been selected as a Rhoden Fellow for the Class of 2023-2024. A staff writer for the FAMUan student newspaper, Goss edits the online newscast at FAMU TV-20 and shoots some weekly newscasts. Goss also anchors the Rattler Take sports show. The Atlanta native transferred to FAMU in 2020 from Hampton University, where he first heard about the Rhoden Fellowship Initiative. He dreams of being a sideline reporter and analyst working the major sports events.
Finally, congratulations to Dean Mira Lowe and the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication for being recognized by Best Colleges at the top HBCU for students pursuing degrees in Public Relations. The website said, “The best HBCUs for public relations have alumni who are accomplished in the PR field. This network can help you make valuable connections and snag opportunities both while in school and after you finish.” FAMU was identified as No. 1 among HBCUs.
Remember, “when the dark clouds gather on the horizon…”
Keep “Striking from the Top!”
