(Queens, NY – June 23, 2022) Heart and Lung Transplant Surgeon and Director of Surgery for STAR (Specialized Transplant AI-Adapted Recovery) Teams, Hassan A. Tetteh, MD, MBA will serve as commencement speaker at the Eagle Academy for Young Men III of Southeast Queens’ graduation ceremony on June 24th. Dr. Tetteh will also give $20,000 in scholarships including a $5,000 endowment to the school and $5,000 each to three top students of the graduating class.

“Giving back to the next generation is a fundamental investment,” Dr. Tetteh said. “I look forward to the young men graduating to one day innovate solutions to make the world better, to lead in local, state, and national agencies and serve others in need. Collectively, an investment in students’ education is a catalyst to ensure a brighter future. In my life, education has been the unequivocal factor to unlocking key opportunities that always led to a better life.”

The students receiving the scholarships will be:

Jamie Sterling

Dante-Isaiah Grange

Christian Jalim

Dr. Tetteh’s longtime friend and fraternity brother, Understanding A. Sowerby, MEd, a high school special education teacher and transition coordinator at the Eagle Academy, recommended that Dr. Tetteh give this year’s commencement speech.

“I've known Dr. Tetteh for over 30 years as an undergrad student, friend and fraternity brother” Sowerby said. “He exemplifies characteristics I wish more of our young men had exposure to, and that success can look like them, too.”

The Eagle Academy for Young Men III of Southeast Queens’ graduating class consists of about 40 ambitious black and brown young men. According to the school’s website, The Eagle Academy Foundation develops and supports a network of all male, grades 6 through 12, college-preparatory schools in challenged, urban communities. Dr. Christopher Smith, principal of the Eagle Academy for Young Men III of Southeast Queens, was elated to hear that Dr. Tetteh would address the school’s graduating class this year.

“I could not be more excited for our graduating class to have the opportunity to learn from Dr. Tetteh’s experience and achievements,” Dr. Smith said. “When I learned of the graduating committee’s proposal that Dr. Tetteh serve as the commencement speaker for our outgoing class, I approved the request without hesitation. His serving in this role perfectly fits the Eagle Academy’s mission to develop young men committed to the pursuit of academic excellence, strong character, and responsible leadership. Dr. Tetteh epitomizes what it means to be an Eagle man.”

The ceremony will take place at The Greater Allen A.M.E Cathedral of New York located at 110-31Merrick Boulevard, St. Albans, Queens, 11433 beginning at 10:00am and ending at 12:00pm.
