Carroll County Commissioner Ed Rothstein Appointed Maryland Veterans Secretary

Congratulations to Ed Rothstein on his recent appointment as secretary of the Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families. Rothstein, a retired Army colonel, has worked in public service in Anne Arundel and Carroll counties and was executive director of the BWI Business Partnership.

Next Commission for Veterans and Military Families (CVMF) Meeting

When: The CVMF regular meeting is scheduled on Aug. 6, 2025, 5 p.m.


Where: Community Resource Building, 30 Duke St., Suite 105, Prince Frederick


Special guest Operation Second Chance will speak about their services and a Southern Maryland Women Veterans Group.

Washington D. C. Marine Barracks Friday Evening Parades

An evening parade of United States Marines in formal uniform across a greenspace.

Parades are held every Friday evening from May through August. Admission is free, but reservations are required.

Free Entrepreneur Training for Veterans

Are you exploring entrepreneurship or looking to grow your small business? Whether you’re just starting out, refining a business idea or ready to take your business to the next level, Project Opportunity is here to support your journey.

This free 10-week training program is designed for military veterans and provides accessible, step-by-step guidance on key business topics like evaluating your idea, marketing, financial management, business structure and creating a business plan. Classes are led by experienced professionals and designed to support all learning styles.


The fall 2025 Southern Maryland cohort begins Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, and will meet weekly from 6:30–9:30 p.m. at 3825 Leonardtown Road, Suite 1, in Waldorf. The program concludes with a formal business pitch and graduation ceremony on Nov. 17, 2025.


To participate, you must attend the mandatory orientation session on Monday, Aug. 25, 2025, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at the same location. If you’re interested but unable to attend the orientation, please contact Program Director Joe Giordano at joe.giordano@project-opportunity.com.

The 147th National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) General Conference is happening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   • What? University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) 2025 Military and Veteran Networking Event (MilVet Net). A no-cost event highlighting national, regional and local support services available to military service members, veterans, spouses, families and caregivers.
  • Where? College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center
  • When? Aug. 27, 2025, from 4-7 p.m.
  • Who? This is open to any military-connected student in the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas. The event offers free admission and free parking, but registration is requested. Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs), nonprofits and employers will be available to meet with you and answer your questions. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to get professional headshots taken!
