Home Repairs Available for

Calvert County Veterans

Applications due Sept. 30

Christmas in April Calvert County, Inc. is calling on local veterans to take advantage of an opportunity that can make a lasting difference in their lives and homes.

Each year, Christmas in April (CIA) organizes skilled and unskilled volunteers to repair and improve homes so that low-income homeowners can continue to live in warmth, safety and independence. All work and materials are provided at no cost to the homeowner. This is more than construction — it’s a community effort to honor service and provide tangible help where it’s most needed.

In 2024 and 2025, CIA assisted a total of seven local veterans, making repairs that improved accessibility, safety and quality of life. Projects included building wheelchair ramps, replacing dangerous steps, repairing roofs, improving bathrooms, installing safety features and more. These upgrades often restore not only homes but hope.

● You must be a homeowner and reside in Calvert County.

● All legal homeowners must live in the home.

● Repairs are prioritized based on safety, accessibility and essential needs.

A Farewell from Brandon Temple, CVMF Outgoing Chairperson

Veterans, Caregivers, Military Families and Citizens of Calvert County:

My family and I are excited to announce that the Air Force approved my request to retire in August 2026. To focus on our transition from what will be 26 years of active service, it’s with great reluctance and sadness that I will be stepping down as chairman and resigning from the commission effective Sept. 1, 2026.

This is a bittersweet moment. As a plank owner member of the Calvert County Commission for Veterans and Military Families, these past four years have been nothing short of remarkable. It has been an honor to serve with my fellow commissioners, ex-officio members and county staff. I am forever grateful and humbled that the team trusted me to lead the commission as chairman for the last three years.

We have accomplished much together over the last four years. We connected hundreds of veterans to critical resources, led the state in supporting military-connected students through Purple Star Schools, and laid the groundwork for generations of veterans and military families to thrive in Calvert County.

There is more work to be done, and the commission will continue working hard to ensure it is living up to its values of honor, advocacy and respect. Vice Chair Patricia “Pat” McCoy will serve as interim chair until November, when officer elections take place.

I want to say thank you to the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners, current and former county administrators, county sheriff and county staff for your unwavering support. Finally, I want to say thank you to all the veterans, caregivers and military families. Thank you for your service to our nation and our county.

God bless,

Dr. Brandon Temple
