Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove Church,

Recently I have heard several government officials quote Romans 13:1-3 in defense of our nation's immigration policy and other issues. Here are the verses for your convenience.

Romans 13:1-3 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive its approval....

To take a tiny nugget of scripture out of the context of its book, and the Bible as a whole, to justify a narrow position is a foolish act of interpretation and displays evidence of an elementary faith and understanding of scripture at best. At worse it is an act of cynical manipulation. To ignore the vast corpus of the Old Testament prophets and the words of John the Baptist and Jesus himself is an inexcusable act of irresponsibility.

The prophets, John the Baptist and Jesus all challenged the governing authorities. Thomas Jefferson challenged King George III with his Declaration of Independence, which Presbyterian Pastor John Witherspoon signed as well.  Frederick Douglas, Susan B. Anthony and Rev. Dr King challenged the laws and the governing authorities.

If the governing authorities fail to act in a just manner, they should be challenged. These principles are in fact underscored in two confessions of the Presbyterian Church USA:  The Barmen Declaration (pp 8.01–.04) and The Belhar Confession. I invite you to follow the links. They don't take long to read, but they do give us a lot to ponder. I hope you will take 15 minutes out of your summer to read them. (While you are on the beach or sitting in the woods or at a nice cafe.) Which is also to say I hope you are enjoying some sabbath, vacation and re-creation time this summer.

This Sunday we will commission 26 youth, young adults and adults at the 11:00 service to head out to West Virginia to the GenOn Logos youth and young adult summit in July. That's pretty remarkable. What a great tradition for our church. Keep them all in your prayers.

Peace of Christ,
Tim

Verse and Prayer
Verse
He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics.

-Mark 6:7-9
Prayer
Mighty and merciful God, lover of justice and equity, you call us to support the weak, to help those who suffer, and to honor all people. By the power of your Holy Spirit, make us advocates for your justice and instruments of your peace, so that all may be reconciled in your beloved community; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

We will be following a concise and profound study by Jeffrey Krehbiel entitled, "Reflecting with Scripture on Community Organizing." Farewell to OBI
We've had a lot of farewells this summer as the people who have warmed our hearts and enriched our souls have continued on God's path, in order to touch even more lives and open more hearts. One group, however, has worked assiduously behind the scenes, so many of you have only been tangentially aware of their good works. Our cleaning team, OBI or Opportunity Builders Inc., had their last day with Ark and Dove, but the many things that they taught us will continue to take seed, like: 1) learning and growing is only a matter of having a loving heart; 2) caring about and looking out for others is the privilege of everyone; and 3) having dignity and self-worth is a treasure beyond measure for those who do not grasp the allure of the shinier objects in our world. We will miss our friends! Thank you to Celeste Kennedy and Wendy Wellington, who made their send-off a day to remember!
