Message from PATA CEO

Dear PATA Members and Industry Colleagues,

The past two weeks have been a real mix of angst and hope. Much of the world was on edge last week watching the turmoil unfold between Russia and the Ukraine. As PATA, it's our core belief and embedded in our mission that travel and tourism can be a force for good and a driver for peace. It serves to build bridges for cultural empathy and understanding across borders. We are deeply saddened to watch the events happening and have empathy for those most impacted by the ongoing war. If you're feeling compelled to support in some way, at the end of my newsletter, below are links provided by our good colleagues at WHO Foundation and UNICEF for options on how to donate humanitarian aid.

WHO Health Emergency Appeal for Ukraine | UNICEF Urgent Appeal for Kids in Ukraine

With respect to the pandemic, many parts of our region are still in the throes of daily escalations in cases - albeit less severe than with the delta variant. This underscores the importance of equitable access to vaccines. On Friday I met with my WHO Foundation and Collinson colleagues working with us on the Global Vaccine Travel Sector Coalition and I'm happy to update that DFS has joined our GoGiveOne campaign. This programme is meant for individuals and corporations to help solve this ongoing global pandemic. Nowhere is safe until everywhere is safe and our global travel community should have the most appreciation for the inequities that exist across the globe.

One ray of hope and positiveness came through in the recent Economist Survey - the survey reports that 87% of travellers consider conscious travel to be important to them. Their survey of more than 4,500 travellers across our region (Australia, Japan, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Korea (ROK), Chinese Taipei, and Thailand) - shows that more than 7 in 10 agree that COVID-19 has changed the way they think about sustainable tourism by making it more important to them. I was honoured to be included in the interview for this report and participate in their recent webinar "Rebuilding Tourism in Asia-Pacific, the Year of the Conscious Traveller" along with Keith Tan of STB, Randy Durband of GSTC, John Lee, DG of Queensland Dept of Tourism, and Theo Yedinsky of Airbnb.

The future is bright…

Best regards, Liz

Asia Week New York

a celebration of Asian art and culture

Asia Week New York is an annual ten-day celebration of Asian art throughout metropolitan New York, with non-stop exhibitions, auctions and special events presented by leading international Asian art specialists, major auction houses, and world-renowned museums and cultural institutions.

For a third year NY PATA member, Florence Li, Songtsam, Director of International Sales & Marketing, will be the Presenting Sponsor of Asia Week New York, March 16th through the 25h in 2022. It’s a collaboration of top-tier international Asian art galleries, the six major auction houses, Bonhams, Christie’s, Doyle, Heritage, iGavel, and Sotheby’s, and numerous museums and Asian cultural institutions.

This year, participants from the United States and abroad will unveil–both virtually and by-appointment only– an extraordinary array of museum-quality treasures from China, India, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, Tibet, Nepal, Japan, and Korea.

Japan Cherry Blossom 2022

Friends and family meet up for hanami (flower viewing) beneath fluttering petals all across the 6,800-island country. It’s rumored that the Japanese aristocracy began the custom of strolling beneath the cherry blossoms in the eighth century, and today it’s a delightful way for anyone to celebrate the season, along with picnics, parties, and festivals. The delicate pink blossoms – or sakura as they’re called in Japanese – are the unofficial flower of Japan.

Images of cherry blossoms endure in Japanese culture and grace everything from fabrics and home decor to modern art, anime, and literature. But there’s nothing quite like seeing Japan’s enchanting cherry trees in full bloom. The delicate pink blossoms appear from south to north across the 2,400-mile country. The flowers’ peak lasts for only about two weeks in each area, which is why they’ve become symbolic of the brevity of life. But their arrival also signals spring’s optimism and renewal.

Borders Reopen to International Travelers

Malaysia

Malaysia is all set to welcome back international travelers after the government announced the full reopening of its borders for the first time after nearly two years of COVID-19 pandemic-related closures as the nation is transitioning to endemic phase, beginning April 1, 2022. Fully-vaccinated travelers can enjoy quarantine-free travel and are only required to take the COVID-19 RT-PCR test two days before departure and undergo professionally administered RTK-Ag within 24 hours upon arrival in Malaysia.

Vietnam

Vietnam has fully reopened its borders as of 15 March 2022, after nearly two years of closure. Tourists are welcome back with no quarantine, no test on arrival and just a minimum of requirements as below.

Negative COVID-19 Test

Travelers entering Vietnam by air must have negative test results for COVID-19, except for children under 2 years old. The test can be done using the RT-PCR method within 72 hours before departure or the rapid antigen methods within 24 hours and has to be certified by the competent authority of the country performing the test.

Nepal

The entry provision has also been changed from last week wherein fully vaccinated international travelers can enter the country by just showing their vaccinated card which is a welcoming move from the government especially when the tourist season is already knocking in our doorsteps. Travelers who have not been vaccinated or have received only one jab need to produce a negative RT-PCR test valid within 72 hours. However, incoming visitors still have to fill in the traveler’s form issued by the Covid-19 Crisis Management Coordination Centre (CCMCC) at the point of entry. Our rejoice have no limits of its leaps and bounds as we will be welcoming our first group of Travelers from the USA after COVID in the first week of April.

New Zealand

Fully-vaccinated visitors from US, UK, EU, Singapore and all other international visa-waiver countries will be welcomed to New Zealand without any need for self-isolation on arrival from 2 May 2022.

All international visitors to New Zealand must

- be fully-vaccinated with an approved vaccine,

- provide evidence of a negative pre-departure Covid-19 test, and

- complete an online travel declaration form.

On arrival, visitors will be provided with two rapid antigen tests (to be self-administered on day 1 and day 5).

Australia

International tourists and business travelers began arriving in Australia on with few restrictions on February 21 for the first time in almost two years after the government lifted some of the most draconian pandemic measures of any democracy in the world.

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said all travelers' vaccination status would be checked before they arrived to avoid a repeat of Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic's visa debacle.

Tourism Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison said she expected tourist numbers would take two years to rebound to pre-pandemic levels.

European Union

While many Americans have decided the pandemic is “over” as it pertains to their own lives, (a full 37 percent, according to the latest YouGov poll) those who’ve been paying close attention to the latest COVID-19 developments overseas are now asking themselves two troublesome questions.

What is happening in Europe? And is it about to happen in the U.S. too?

Over the last two weeks, COVID cases have shot up more than 25% across the European Union.

We wish you a Happy and Colorful Holi

NY PATA Member Destination – Sri Lanka

The magic of Sri Lanka lies within its pristine beaches, spiritual nature, majestic wildlife, daring adventures, and countless unforgettable experiences. Admire the elephant herd in Minneriya National Park, surf in the waves of Arugum Bay, raft in the white waters of Kitulgala; nothing makes these once-in-a-lifetime memories more Sri Lanka.

Fully-vaccinated travelers are exempted from mandatory PCR tests and quarantine requirements, while the non-fully-vaccinated travelers should stay in "flexible bio-bubble" hotels and visit approved tourist sites. Check out the latest updates >

Reopen Borders Marketing Campaign

This year, Tourism Ireland will roll out its biggest ever marketing program in the USA, to restart overseas tourism to the island of Ireland. Following a difficult two years for the tourism and hospitality sector, Tourism Ireland will upweight its campaigns, aim to cut through the clutter and convert “lookers” into “bookers”. From their research, they know that there is significant competition in the marketplace; every destination has experienced the impact of COVID-19 and is now seeking its share of the recovery. Tourism Ireland’s message is that Ireland is open for business again and that we cannot wait to welcome back American visitors.

Hope you're having a wonderful day.

Cheers!
