Boston University Marsh Chapel & Religious Life

Dear Marsh,

An early Happy Thanksgiving and festive start to the winter holidays! All of us at Marsh joyfully send you and your family our warmest wishes as we rapidly approach the Advent Season!

Speaking of Advent, I wish to share with you several opportunities for fellowship during the Advent Season. First, to kick off our Advent preparations, we invite you to join Rev. Karen Coleman and me (Chloe) to make fresh Advent Wreaths in the Marsh room following this Sunday's (11/24) worship service. This annual tradition is always a hit and this year we are doing it a week early so you can begin Advent with your wreath on December 1st. We also wish to invite you to join us for Lessons & Carols on Friday, December 6th and/or Sunday December 8th. The service will also be livestreamed and available later for your re-watching enjoyment! Later in December, we are thrilled to welcome Bill Cordts back to lead a two-week after service Bible Study on Sundays, December 15th and 22nd at 12:30PM in the Thurman Room. Further details for all of these opportunities can be found below.

Finally, for those of you looking for a daily dose of Advent inspiration, I encourage you to sign up for our Advent Daily Devotion email list. This devotion series was put together by our own Rev. Dr. Jessica Chicka and her graduate assistant, Darby McMonagle, and each day's reflection is offered by someone from our staff, congregation, or extended Marsh Chapel community of friends.

We hope you will join us in person, online, or through your daily enjoyment of the devotional series this Advent as we anxiously await the movement and presence of Christ. We are grateful for each of you and your positive presence in our community!

With Gratitude,

Chloe Kantharia

Drawing Near: Advent Devotions 2024

As we await the arrival of Jesus this advent season, we are reminded of the importance of community. Jesus, from the moment his birth was announced to today, has been inspiring and creating communities. These communities are made up of a variety of different people, whom together embody the beauty that is the Body of Christ moving and beckoning to the world. This year, for our annual advent devotional, we focus on the “Drawing Near” that calls people into community with God and with one another. Our scripture passages will focus on four different communities of faithful believers who were drawn near to the Divine within Scripture in particular and miraculous ways – the treasured, the followers, the messengers, and the wanderers. “Treasured” refers to the people and moments which God chooses for a special purpose. “Followers” refers to the inherent movements of faith; to follow one another and follow God. “Messengers” refers to the times in which the prophecy of Jesus was proclaimed and people were called to pause and listen. Lastly, “Wanderers” refers to the moments in life we are reassured about our faith through wisdom and grace.

Each day of Advent, Marsh Chapel staff, students, and friends will provide daily reflections based on scripture passages, culminating on Christmas Day.
