Jewish Inspiration
Congratulations to Bais Chabad member Dmitri Salita on being inducted into the New York Boxing Hall of Fame!

Dmitriy Salita says never fighting on Shabbos gave him balance in a crazy world.

JNS.org
Dmitriy Salita remembers fighting for respect in the ring. His record speaks for itself; he fought professionally from 2001 to 2013 with a record of 35-2-1 and 18 knockouts.

The former Brooklyn resident will join friends and fellow former pugilists Zab Judah and Paulie Malignaggi in being inducted into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame on April 30. Salita’s name will be etched in history along with Jewish fighters such as Benny Leonard and Maxie Rosenbloom.

“As a Ukrainian immigrant coming to America to make my dreams come true and an Orthodox Jew who did not fight on Shabbos, it’s a great honor to know I’ll be inducted into the Hall of Fame with my friends Zab and Paulie,”
Couple Celebrates Birth of First Child After 33 Years of Marriage

Rabbi and Mrs. Efraim Fishel Yisroel Weinberger, from the Bobov community, have celebrated their first child after 33 years of marriage.
11 years ago, the Weinbergers moved from Boro Park to Yerushalayim. Rabbi Weinberger, 52, serves as a teacher in Yeshiva in Yerushalayim.
He and his wife married in 1989. Rav Shlomo of Bobov, the Bobover Rebbe obm, attended their wedding 33 years ago.
The Weinbergers now live in Romema.
The baby was born today at the Laniado Hospital in Kiryat Sanz, Netanya.

Message from the Rabbi
Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg
Many of you have probably heard the term “Hakhel,” which means “gather [the Jewish people]”, during the last few months. The mitzvah of hakhel, the 612th (of 613) mitzvos in the Torah, was observed once in seven years, during the holiday of Sukkos that occurred right after a Shmitah year. During the times when the Bais Hamikdash stood, on that Sukkos, all Jews – men, women and children - came to Jerusalem to hear the Jewish king read specific passages from the Torah, whose content would inspire the listeners to greater love and fear of G-d.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe obm pointed out that while technically this mitzvah cannot be properly observed without a Holy Temple, nevertheless we do have a concept of observing certain practices to commemorate mitzvos that were done in the past (for example, Levites washing the hands of the Kohanim before they bless the people). In this spirit he proposed that during a hakhel year, we attempt to make more gatherings (of any kind) of Jews, which will include sharing words of Torah to encourage increased Torah study and performance of mitzvos.

You may have noticed that our Shabbos kiddushim have become more of a lunch than a kiddush, and they always contain words of Torah and are capped off with a small farbrengen. These kiddushim too have become hakhel gatherings.

I’d like to invite whoever will be in Florida on Sunday January 22, to join Chaya Sarah and myself and Rabbi Kopel and Goldy for this year’s Bais Chabad Torah Center Florida Hakhel gathering. Brunch at 11:30 am will be at Carmela’s, 7300 West Camino Real, Boca Raton. The cost is $32.00 per person (not including gratuities). We must reserve the space, so it is essential that you respond by January 15 if you plan to attend. Please call or text me at 248-705-3561, or email me at bctc770@aol.com.
Thank you!

Shabbos Story
He Cheated the Angel of Death
By Aharon Loschak

Satan, the angel of death, and the evil inclination are all one (Bava Batra 16a).

Reb Shmaya was a venerable chassid of the Rebbe of Kotzk, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Morgenstern. Shmaya’s friends knew him as sincere, pious, and humble, more so than anyone else they knew.

And then, disaster struck. Shmaya fell deathly ill. His situation deteriorated, and before long, the end was approaching. He lay on his deathbed, frighteningly pale, holding onto the very last threads of life.

Sweet Fruity Noodle Kugel
with apples, dates, raisins, and lemon
By Miriam Szokovski

Ingredients
12 oz wide egg noodles
2 apples, finely diced
⅓ cup raisins
⅓ cup chopped dates
⅓ cup oil
⅓ cup brown sugar
⅓ cup white sugar
6 eggs
½ tsp ginger powder
Zest of 1 lemon
Pinch of salt

Directions
Soak the raisins in hot water for 20 minutes.
Crack the eggs and check for blood spots. Beat in a large bowl. Add all the ingredients except for the egg noodles.
Boil the egg noodles until soft.
Drain the noodles and mix a small amount into the egg mixture and mix well. Then add the rest of the noodles (doing it like this prevents the eggs from curdling). Toss well to coat all the noodles.
Grease a 9x13 baking dish (smaller if you like a thicker kugel), and pour in the mixture.
Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 40 minutes.
Serves 8-10
Parsha in a Nutshell
Parshat Vayechi

Jacob lives the final 17 years of his life in Egypt. Before his passing, he asks Joseph to take an oath that he will bury him in the Holy Land. He blesses Joseph’s two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, elevating them to the status of his own sons as progenitors of tribes within the nation of Israel.

The patriarch desires to reveal the end of days to his children, but is prevented from doing so.

Jacob blesses his sons, assigning to each his role as a tribe: Judah will produce leaders, legislators and kings; priests will come from Levi, scholars from Issachar, seafarers from Zebulun, schoolteachers from Simeon, soldiers from Gad, judges from Dan, olive-growers from Asher, and so on. Reuben is rebuked for “confusing his father’s marriage bed”; Simeon and Levi, for the massacre of Shechem and the plot against Joseph. Naphtali is granted the swiftness of a deer, Benjamin the ferociousness of a wolf, and Joseph is blessed with beauty and fertility.

A large funeral procession consisting of Jacob’s descendants, Pharaoh’s ministers, the leading citizens of Egypt and the Egyptian cavalry accompanies Jacob on his final journey to the Holy Land, where he is buried in the Machpelah Cave in Hebron.

Joseph, too, dies in Egypt, at the age of 110. He, too, instructs that his bones be taken out of Egypt and buried in the Holy Land, but this would come to pass only with the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt many years later. Before his passing, Joseph conveys to the Children of Israel the testament from which they will draw their hope and faith in the difficult years to come: “G‑d will surely remember you, and bring you up out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
