Welcome from Dr. Russell •••
Dear District 58 Families and Staff Members,
I hope this letter finds you well and that you had a wonderful summer with family and friends. We are beyond excited to start the new school year, which is always filled with energy, excitement and hope. As we prepare to start a new school year, I want to thank you for your partnership.
One of the best things about the upcoming school year is that we are able to approach it in a much more traditional manner. Moving forward, we will continue to place the students and staff at the forefront of all decisions. I have no doubt that no matter what is thrown our way, we will continue to meet every challenge head-on as a community.
Last year and over the summer the District moved forward on several key initiatives, and below are some of the highlights:
-
Engaging the community on District 58’s facility needs and using their input to inform a facility recommendation to the Board (Learn more about facility planning here.)
- Receiving the Board of Education’s approval to pursue a referendum regarding the District’s facilities in November 2022
- Earning the State’s highest financial recognition award for the 20th straight year
- Adopting new curriculum resources and programs
- Developing new key performance indicators for student achievement and growth
- Hiring staff members during a historic teacher/support staff shortage
- Increasing the District’s special services and dual language programs
- Making building improvements (playgrounds, flooring, roofing, masonry, etc.)
-
Transitioning to a temporary administrative center and forming a long-term partnership with the Village of Downers Grove on a shared space (View a short video to learn more.)
I want to thank each of you for your support and engagement, and I look forward to another great school year! Thank you once again for your partnership, flexibility, grace and resilience. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our District Office if you have any questions or need anything as we begin this new year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kevin B. Russell
Superintendent of Schools

Curriculum Resources
District 58 will implement the Savvas my World social studies curriculum resource for grades K-5 this fall. District 58 recommended this resource after a successful pilot last school year. It aligns with the State's Social Science Learning standards and follows an inquiry-based instructional model.
The District also will implement the Quaver music curriculum for grades K-6 with resources for middle school. District 58's music teachers have used various Quaver resources and highly recommended full implementation.
Finally, select District 58 teachers will pilot two new writing curriculum resources this school year.
| |
Two-Way Dual Language
District 58 has offered a one-way dual language program for native Spanish speakers since 2014. This fall, District 58 will proudly open a two-way dual language program for kindergarteners. The program will be housed at El Sierra and for the first time comprise both native English and Spanish speakers. The program will grow by one grade level every school year.
District 58’s Dual Language Committee recommended a two-way dual language program after completing extensive research, meeting with dual language experts and seeking feedback.

Middle School Schedule
Middle schoolers will gain time to access instructional supports without any major impacts to the school day, thanks to the new Student Advisory Period and Student Support Period.
The Student Advisory Period will provide dedicated time at the start of the school day for announcements, executive functioning supports, school-day preparation and more.
The Student Support Period replaces homebase (the half period connected to lunch) and give students dedicated time to access interventions, social-emotional groups, enrichment activities and other supports, while others may use it as a study hall (similar to how homebase previously worked).

Heat relief and the District 58 referendum ••
Eleven of District 58's 13 schools are not fully air-conditioned, and schools can get hot. To alleviate the heat, our schools use their resources and building spaces wisely to provide heat relief for students and staff on hot days. Please click here to learn some of the ways our schools keep students and staff cool on hot days.
Looking long-term, District 58, with community input, developed a comprehensive facility proposal that includes over $50 million to install air conditioning and improve ventilation/air quality. This summer, the Board of Education voted unanimously to place the facility proposal on the November 2022 ballot. In addition to installing air-conditioning and improving ventilation/air quality, the full $179 million facility proposal includes adding more secure entrances at all schools, completing school maintenance work, and building additions to the middle schools to provide space for sixth graders and relieve elementary school overcrowding.
If voters approve the referendum in November, District 58 would be able to install air conditioning and improve ventilation at schools. Please click here to learn more about District 58's facility planning. Please note - District 58 will be publishing a new webpage that provides an overview of referendum facts within the next two weeks.
