Winter Weather Series Part 5: How does District 58 prepare the grounds for inclement weather?
District 58 has been sharing one winter weather FAQ in recent Communicate 58 newsletters. To view all FAQs, please visit www.dg58.org/family-resources/winter. Today's FAQ: How does District 58 prepare the grounds for inclement weather?

District 58’s Buildings and Grounds team proactively monitors the weather along with our snow removal contractor. Plowing and salting begins as soon as conditions warrant. The goal is to remove all snow/ice from roads, parking lots and walkways within four hours after the conclusion of a snowfall. The timing and amount of precipitation always requires adjustments to the plans. The use of winter de-icing products helps prevent and/or break the bond between snow/ice and the pavement in order to provide safer conditions. Unfortunately, de-icing chemicals lose effectiveness in extremely cold temperatures and some pavement areas may still be slick. Please use extra caution when traveling on any pavement surface, such as roads, parking lots and sidewalks, during extremely cold weather events.
BOARD NEWS
Board hosts annual Legislative Forum
District 58 welcomed seven elected officials, along with many school and community leaders, to O'Neill Middle School for the annual Legislative Forum on Friday, Jan. 28. The following legislators participated in the event:

* U.S. Rep. Sean Casten
* U.S. Rep. Bill Foster
* Sen. John Curran
* Sen. Suzy Glowiak-Hilton
* Rep. Terra Costa Howard
* Rep. Deanne Mazzochi
* Rep. Anne Stava-Murray

On a panel, the entire legislative group briefly discussed the current youth mental health crisis and opportunities for school districts and elected officials to partner on solutions. Then, the elected officials and audience members participated in two small group breakout sessions. During this time, the elected officials and audience held smaller, more casual conversations regarding education issues and legislation. Conversation topics ranged from infrastructure legislation and COVID mitigations to accountability measures and the impacts of unfunded mandates. Click here to learn more.
Special Meeting The Board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 5 p.m. at Downers Grove Village Hall to consider potential action to authorize suspension of enforcement of certain COVID-19 mitigation measures to the extent consistent with court rulings.

February Business Meeting: The Board will hold a regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at Downers Grove Village Hall. The meeting agenda will be posted on BoardDocs Friday evening.

The Board will also host a "Community Conversation with the Board" on Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Village Hall (in the vestibule outside the Council Chambers). This is an opportunity for Board and community members to have informal conversations prior to the meeting.
