Summer learning opportunities abound in District 58!
District 58 encourages all students to continue reading and practicing math this summer! Here are some helpful summer learning resources.

* Top 10 Books for First-through-Sixth Graders (created by Highland School students!)

District 58 also offers Summer School and Extended School Year programs. Registration for both programs has concluded. District 58 looks forward to an amazing summer of learning!

Take the Communication Satisfaction and Preferences Survey by June 12
District 58 launches new Communication Guide
As part of  Strategic Plan Goal 2: Connecting the Community , District 58 announces two District 58 communication improvement efforts.

First, District 58 invites all parents, staff members and community members to take its Communication Satisfaction and Preferences Survey , now through Wednesday, June 12. The survey should take no more than 10 minutes, and the results will guide the District's communication improvement efforts. Thank you for your time!

Second, District 58 published its Communication Guide . This helpful resource describes how to access the District’s different communication tools, as well as their frequency and purpose. This guide was created with input from the Strategic Plan Goal 2: Connecting the Community working groups this school year. District 58 names new administrators at Herrick, Highland & Fairmount
The Board of Education approved four administrative appointments this month. Each new administrator will begin working for District 58 this summer.

District 58 warmly welcomes the following newly-appointed administrators:

* Zachary Craft , Highland School principal

* Amy Read , Herrick Middle School principal

* Christine Priester , Highland School assistant principal/curriculum coordinator

* Matthew Jewell, Fairmount School assistant principal/curriculum coordinator

Learn about facility planning in District 58
District 58 is developing a Facility Master Plan to guide future facility decision-making. Learn more about this process by visiting the District 58 Facility Planning webpage. The District hosted two facility planning community engagement sessions this week, and intends to hold additional opportunities for public input later this year.

District 58 earns State's highest financial recognition
The Illinois State Board of Education awarded District 58 with a Financial Recognition rating on the District’s 2019 School District Financial Profile . Financial Recognition is the highest financial strength rating that ISBE awards, and this year marks the 18th consecutive year District 58 achieved this status. Learn more .
Please register your child for the 2019-20 school year
Online registration for the 2019-20 school year was due Friday, May 17. District 58 thanks the 86 percent of returning students who submitted their registration!

District 58 will continue to accept online registrations for 2019-20 and urges parents to please complete their children's registration as soon as possible.

District 58's Director of Innovative Technology and Learning James Eichmiller recently earned his doctor of education (Ed.D.) in educational leadership and administration from National Louis University.

Register for sports camps
Herrick and O'Neill will offer one-week summer sports camps for students entering grades 5-8.



Summer hours in District 58
District 58 school offices will close for the summer on June 13 and reopen the first week of August, exact date TBA.

District offices will follow summer hours from June 17-July 26. During this timeframe, District offices will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The offices will be closed on Fridays.

Five District 58 students honored at State Science Exposition
District 58 congratulates the five middle school students whose four Science Fair projects were honored at the State Science Expo this month.

Projects competing at the state level each earned awards and advanced through a competitive judging process at the local and regional levels.

The State Science Expo awarded students with a Gold, Silver or Bronze award.


Gold:
Caralyn Fleming, Herrick seventh grader: “How does the angle of a solar panel affect the amount of power produced?”

Zaara Haque, Herrick eighth grader: “Initiating global cooling: Could dissolved salts modify the freezing point of water?”

Taran Sooranahalli, O’Neill eighth grader: “How does the shape of a water turbine affect its ability to produce hydroelectric power?”

Silver:
Justin Martinets and Ellis Sioukas, Herrick eighth graders: “How does the type of cleaning product affect the amount of DNA extracted from a strawberry?”
O'Neill student wins Patriot's Pen essay contest
The VFW Century Post 503 selected an essay written by Ryan Lynde, an O’Neill eighth grader, as the winner of its 2019 Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. Ryan’s essay also competed at the contest’s district regional level, where it came in second place out of 2,220 essay submissions.

Patriot’s Pen is the VFW’s nationwide youth essay competition and encourages children to express their views on democracy. This year’s theme was “Why I Honor the American Flag.”

Pierce Downer second graders win major IXL Challenge
 Students comes in first place in Illinois, 10th place in nation
Miss Lindberg’s Pierce Downer second graders had a busy April. During their free time, her students could be found working on math and language arts problems using the IXL app, as part of the IXL April Challenge.

Their hard work paid off – the students recently learned that they solved the most number of questions out of every participating classroom in Illinois! Plus, they came in 10th place out of 18,000 classrooms across the U.S.! Congratulations!! Plus, the students collectively answered 98,677 IXL questions in the month of April. Great work! 58Doing Good: Herrick hosted a volleyball game fundraiser that raised $1,968 to support the Beth Dunlap Fund. Thank you! Beth was an alumna of Herrick Middle School.
Fairmount fifth graders created mind maps to turn abstract science concepts into visuals. The students enjoyed getting creative!
Kingsley students painted beautiful flowers during art class to celebrate the spring weather!
KidList named Owen's Playground at Hillcrest as one of the top 10 playgrounds in the western/southwestern Chicago suburbs! District 58 is very proud to be home to this fantastic and inclusive playground!
Belle Aire first and second graders performed a fantastic patriotic-themed spring concert! View this 21-second video for highlights!
Whittier employees celebrated Staff Appreciation Week by giving back! As a group, they volunteered at Feed My Starving Children.

Board Preview: June Board Meeting
The Board will hold a regular business meeting on Wednesday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at Downers Grove Village Hall. The agenda will be posted Monday, June 3. Note: this meeting does not occur on the usual second Monday of the month, due to a conflict with eighth grade promotion ceremonies.

The Education Foundation invites community members to honor a District 58 employee with a Green Apple Award this spring! Simply make a Green Apple donation and type a message for the employee you are honoring. Education Foundation hosts open house
 Looking for a way to support District 58 in a meaningful and impactful manner? Please consider joining the Education Foundation!

The Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58 will hold an open house for prospective new members on Wednesday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Cadence Kitchen, 5101 Mochel Drive.

The Education Foundation seeks community members interested in fundraising and/or organizing its programs that support District 58.
