Downers Grove community supports schools at Oktoberfest
District 58 thanks the many community members who supported their local schools while having fun at Downers Grove Oktoberfest last weekend!

This fantastic community event was made possible by the Education Foundation's Oktoberfest Committee, as well as corporate sponsors and hundreds of volunteers. All proceeds from Oktoberfest will support the Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58, the non-profit that provides funding for many integral programs and resources, including the District 58 Teacher Grants Program, The Reading Games, Distinguished Service Awards, Select 58, Sneak Preview and more.
District 58 seeks new members for councils and committees

Learn about District 58's bus service
District 58 and its transportation providers encountered unique challenges preparing bus routes this summer due to the nationwide bus driver shortage. We realize that some routes required several changes, and we appreciate your patience as we've worked to make improvements.

District shares online instruction guidance for families
District 58 may provide virtual instruction via Google Meet and Google Classroom to students who are quarantined at home due to COVID-19. To deliver general and special education instruction, related services and interventions with fidelity, District 58 asks all families to please read and abide by the expectations shared in this online instruction guidance document. Thank you for your cooperation!
District 58 tackles many summer construction projects
District 58 tackled several facility projects this summer! Most projects are complete, with a few running behind schedule due to supply chain delays. Crews are working in the evenings and weekends to finish as quickly as possible while minimizing disruptions to students.

Susan Dillon appointed to District 58 preschool coordinator
District 58 is pleased to announce that Susan Dillon will serve as the new coordinator of the Grove Children's Preschool program. Ms. Dillon was formally approved by the Board on Sept. 13.

“The interview teams described Ms. Dillon as passionate and knowledgeable about early learners. They were particularly impressed with the breadth and depth of her educational experiences within the field," said Superintendent Dr. Kevin Russell. "I am very excited to welcome Ms. Dillon to Grove Children’s Preschool, and I am confident she will be a great addition to our team!”

District 58 to launch emergency preparedness series
In honor of Preparedness Month, District 58 will launch an emergency preparedness communication series next week. On Monday through Thursday, District 58 will email brief messages on the following topics:

Part 1: How does D58 prepare for school emergencies?
Part 2: How can families prepare for school emergencies?
Part 3: How does District 58 communicate emergency information?
Part 4: How does District 58 respond to emergencies?

The week will culminate with a test of its parent notification system using voice, text and email messaging. If your contact information has recently changed, please let your school office know. Thank you!
District reviews, posts communication survey results
District 58 thanks the 644 community members who responded to the annual Communication Satisfaction & Preferences Survey last June. Since June, District 58 has taken the following actions:

* All survey-takers were asked if they would like a District 58 employee to follow-up with them on their survey responses. All survey-takers who requested this received a follow-up contact.

* The District analyzed the survey results and presented them to the District Leadership Team. This presentation covered survey trends, key takeaways, areas of strength, and actionable opportunities of growth.

* The District posted raw survey results and the survey presentation on the District's survey page. Community members may also view the results directly via the links below:

National Custodial Worker's Recognition Day is Wednesday, Oct. 2. On behalf of District 58, thank you, custodial staff, for keeping District 58 schools clean, functional and safe.

We especially appreciate you going above and beyond to ensure our schools are clean during the COVID-19 pandemic!

Sign up for COVID testing
District 58 started its voluntary COVID testing program this week! Families may opt their child in or out at any time. Click here to learn more. Please see Dr. Russell's Sept. 15 email to access COVID testing program sign up links for individual schools.

Bus close contacts updated
As shared on Sept. 15, anyone exposed to a COVID-19 case on a bus will not be considered a close contact if they meet the following:
* Both the positive COVID case and the individual correctly and consistently wore a mask
*The individual was seated more than 3 feet from the positive case
*The bus windows were open at the time of exposure
IAR window opens
 District 58 will administer the Illinois Assessment of Readiness to students in grades 4-9 between Sept. 20 and Oct. 8. As with any task, District 58 encourages all students to take this assessment seriously and do their best.

District earns two communication awards
District 58 earned two communication awards for this Communicate 58 newsletter, as well as its 58 Connects staff newsletter, from the Illinois chapter of the National School Public Relations Association, or INSPRA. Congratulations!

Retired Herrick teacher writes book about school history
Dr. Kenneth D. Tyler, a retired Herrick teacher and team leader, recently visited Herrick to present copies of his published history of the school to Principal Dr. David Norman and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Justin Sisul.

Interested in the book? A limited number of copies are available at the Herrick office for purchase. Please call the school to inquire. Dr. Tyler also donated complimentary copies of the book to District 58, the library and the Education Foundation. Thank you, Dr. Tyler, for compiling a compelling history of Herrick Middle School!
