Focusing on learning: Board approves new science resources

District 58 is proud to announce that new science materials have been adopted and will be implemented in the 2019-20 school year. The new science curriculum resources are:
The District's STEM Committee, which comprises teachers and administrators, selected these resources after several years of research on the new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and curricular options, as well as piloting different resource options in their classrooms this fall.

Superintendent search: What's next?

District 58 thanks the 930 community members who completed the superintendent search survey, as well as everyone who attended Wednesday's superintendent search focus groups. Your input will help the Board of Education hire our next superintendent.
What's next? The search firm BWP & Associates will compile the survey and focus group feedback and use it to create a leadership profile. When available, both the survey results and leadership profile will be posted on the
superintendent search page.

Eighth graders invited to apply for a Select 58 Award

The Education Foundation invites eighth graders to apply for a Select 58 Recognition Award now through Monday, March 11.
Select 58 annually recognizes eighth graders who exhibit outstanding service and citizenry. The Education Foundation will host a ceremony on Monday, May 6 for award recipients.

5Essentials survey extended
•
Speaking of surveys, the State has extended its 5Essentials survey window through March 15. This survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and test score gains.

Summer school registration opens March 1

It may be cold and snowy outside, but summer is just around the corner! In fact, District 58 will open Summer School registration on Friday, March 1. Be on the lookout - We will email parents more information soon.

The Reading Games seeks volunteer moderators and scorekeepers to make it a success! The event will take place Saturday, March 16.

Five Herrick and O'Neill students advance to regional science fair

District 58 congratulates the five middle school students whose projects will advance to the regional science fair:
- Caralyn Fleming, Herrick seventh grader: "How does the angle of a solar panel affect the amount of power produced?"
- Justin Martinets and Ellis Sioukas, Herrick eighth graders: "How does the type of cleaning product affect the amount of DNA extracted from a strawberry?"
- Taran Sooranahalli, O'Neill eighth grader: How does the shape of a water turbine affect its ability to produce hydroelectric power?"
- Zaara Haque, Herrick eighth grader: "Initiating global cooling: Could dissolved salts modify the freezing point of water?"

Lester students, invited loved ones to jump rope with them during the
Kids Heart Challenge. Proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association.

Belle Aire fifth graders embarked on a Valentine's Day-themed Escape Room activity! First task- proofreading an actual love letter that Ernest Hemingway once wrote. Students used correct editing symbols to make Hemingway's letter perfect.

Whittier third graders wanted to give back, so they made blankets for animals at the West Suburban Human Society and created cards for sick children at Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago. Thank you!

Grove Children's Preschool is having *snow* much fun exploring the great outdoors! The kids went outside and discussed how snow feels and sounds. They also talked about how trees and grass look when covered with snow. It's so interesting to explore the world through the eyes of a young child!
|
|
• District 58 kindergarteners and first graders celebrated the 100th day of school this past week! Many students, including these
Kingsley students, even dressed up like 100-year-olds for the occasion.
|
|

Indian Trail fourth graders completed a STEAM challenge when creating their Valentine's Day boxes. The students loved using science, art and creativity to make their boxes special!

The
Highland
PTA hosted a superhero-themed Grade K-2 Family Reading Night. Families had so much fun reading and learning with their children!

Curriculum Workshop is Feb. 25

The Board will hold a Curriculum Workshop
on
Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at Fairmount School, 6036 Blodgett Ave. The meeting will feature a curriculum presentation, followed by an extended reception of visitors opportunity, during which the community and Board can engage in a 30-minute two-way dialogue.
