Another Science Fair success!
The 2019 Science Fair was a hit! 509 students proudly presented their scientific research and discoveries through a written report and verbal presentation.

This terrific event could not have happened without our community's commitment. Thank you to our volunteer judges, our administration and O'Neill custodial teams for setting up/tearing down, the students for their hard work, and parents for their support! A special thanks also to Science Fair head organizers: Mr. Borchelt, Mrs. Rzepka, Mr. Lynde and Mrs. Novosel.

Superintendent search: Community survey opens Monday
The Board of Education has launched a nationwide search to identify District 58's next superintendent. The Board met with search firm BWP & Associates on Feb. 4 to plan the hiring process. The Board seeks broad community input to inform its decision. Please save the dates:

Monday, Feb. 11: BWP will open an online survey to learn the community's vision for District 58's next superintendent. District 58 will email parents and staff the survey on Feb. 11 and post it online.

Wednesday, Feb. 20: BWP and the Board will hold several stakeholder focus groups to gain additional feedback. Details are coming soon, but mark your calendar for an open Community Input Session at 7 p.m.!

Facility planning in District 58
District 58 is creating a master facility plan to prepare its buildings for the future in accordance with its Strategic Plan. The District recently held staff and community visioning sessions to inform stakeholders about facility needs and to gain a better understanding of the community's vision for District 58 facilities. A comprehensive report of findings from the visioning sessions as well as in-depth facility assessments will be presented to the Board Monday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at Village Hall during the Board’s Regular Meeting.


Reminder:
No school Feb. 15 and Feb. 18
There is no school for students on Friday, Feb. 15 for a Teacher Inservice Day. During Friday's inservice, teachers will participate in high-quality professional learning related to new science standards, teaching practices and instructional technology. Teachers will also choose from several elective courses covering subject-specific curriculum enhancements, assessments, social-emotional learning and much more.

There will also be no school on Monday, Feb. 18 for Presidents Day. Enjoy the four-day weekend!
Calling all kindergarteners for the 2019-20 school year!
Will your child attend kindergarten in District 58 next fall? Here are three steps to prepare!

1. Call your child's future school to request registration information.

2. Attend Kindergarten Roundup in March or April.

Forty D58 students perform in prestigious ILMEA chorus
 District 58 congratulates the 40 fifth and sixth graders selected to participate in ILMEA's All-State Elementary Chorus in Peoria on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Attend the Harlem Wizards fundraiser Feb. 24
Come see the famous Harlem Wizards take on the Downers Grovetrotters - a basketball team starring your teachers and staff - on Feb. 24. Proceeds benefit the Education Foundation.
Grove Children's Preschool opens 2019-20 registration
Will your child be 3-5 years old next school year? Register him or her for Grove Children's Preschool! Learn more at an open house tonight (2/7) at Indian Trail at 6 p.m.!
Take the 5Essentials Survey
 District 58 invites parents to take the state's 5Essentials Survey now through Feb. 15. 5Essentials gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.

District 58 has immediate openings for instructional assistants. The District is also hiring a special education teacher, school nurse, school psychologist and a speech language pathologist for next school year.

Fairmount PTA earns
$1,000 STEM + Families Grant
District 58 congratulates the Fairmount PTA for earning a $1,000 STEM + Families Grant from the National PTA and Mathnasium.

The Fairmount PTA used this funding to host an interactive STEM + Families Math Night on Thursday, Jan. 24.

Whittier uses grant to create a fun Workout Walkway
Whittier Reading Specialist Christy Gergits earned a DuPage Color Grant from the DuPage Credit Union to create a Whittier Workout Walkway.

Mrs. Gergits used the grant funding to buy vinyl decals, which she placed throughout Whittier's hallways. Each decal has a fun and simple exercise prompt. Now, when students walk through Whittier's halls, they have the option to participate in some light exercise! The decals were just installed last month, but they're already a huge hit! Watch this short video to see the Whittier Workout Walkway in action! Great job Mrs. Gergits!
Herrick raised $2,163.74 to benefit LustGarten Foundation, an organization that contributes 100 percent of their donations to pancreatic cancer research, during their staff versus eighth grade basketball game Dec. 20.

The  O'Neill PTA  joined Raise Craze, a unique way to raise money while making an impact in our community. During this fundraiser, students ask friends and family for donations while paying it forward serving others! In the first few hours of the program alone, O'Neill raised more than $1,000 and completed more than 200 acts of kindness.
Kingsley second graders are flipping for animation, literally! During art class, they learned how to create simple animations using their iPads. View art teacher Mrs. Lukes' Twitter page for a few examples!
Hillcrest first graders in Mrs. Prosser's classroom are studying the Chinese New Year! Most first graders were born in the years of the Tiger or Rabbit.
The Downers Grove Fire Department visited Grove Children's Preschool. Students learned about the important roles that firefighters play in our community!
Brrr! El Sierra students enjoyed a read-a-loud about recess in Alaska when it is -20 degrees outside. After recent weather, students could sure relate!
The Highland Student Council invited students to donate $1 to participate in Pajama Day. All proceeds will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation!
ABC 7 Chicago recently interviewed Pierce Downer student Augie M. as part of their Great Chicago Blood Drive! 

Lester students use different features on their iPads to explore and learn more about measurements.
Belle Aire second graders studied painter Henri Rousseau during Art Awareness and created their own Rousseau-style drawings. Nice work!
The Indian Trail Student Council gave a fantastic presentation to the Board last month regarding all their recent achievements. View their presentation.
Henry Puffer students proudly wear their school shirts while bonding with their schoolmates during the Henry Puffer School Families program.

Board Members Greg Harris and Darren Hughes toured Highland School Jan. 24 and attended the school's PTA meeting to answer questions from the community. View the Board's tour/PTA visit calendar.

Looking ahead: February meetings
The Board of Education will hold a regular meeting Monday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at Village Hall. The agenda will include spotlights on parent partnerships in learning and on the fall 2018 parent survey results. The meeting also includes discussions on facility planning and professional learning. The meeting agenda will be posted Feb. 8.

The Board will hold a Curriculum Workshop on Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at Fairmount School, 6036 Blodgett Ave.
