News and Announcements
Census 2020

Census 2020, Coming Soon in Mid-March!

What is the Census 2020?
Every Ten Years, the United States Census Bureau conducts the Census Complete Count on all national and local levels. Census Day is April 1st, 2020!

Why is it important to complete the Census questionnaire?
#1 It provides an accurate population count in Texas, in Leon Valley.
#2 The Census is used to update the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives (Congressional Reapportionment).
#3 The Census count impacts the federal funds that communities receive for Hospitals & Healthcare, Public Safety, Roads & Transportation and Schools & Education (special education, classroom technology, teacher training, after-school programs, school lunch assistance).

How Census 2020 will invite everyone to respond?
Every household will have the option of responding online, by mail or by phone. Nearly every household will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census from either a postal worker or a census worker. Census 2020, Coming Soon in Mid-March!

Three ways to respond to the 2020 Census.
By April 1, 2020, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. You will have three options for responding:
  • Online.
  • By phone.
  • By mail.
  • Computer stations are available at the Library at 6425 Evers Rd, Leon Valley, TX 78238
For additional information access, http://www.leonvalleytexas.gov/quick_links/census_2020.php and https://2020census.gov.

Why is "Census 2020" important for our City of Leon Valley Community?
Our City was designated as one of the Hardest to Count (HTC) tracts in the nation with 2010 mail return rates of 73% or less.  In 2010, a very large geographical portion of the City of Leon Valley comprised our HTC area.  In addition, the City of Leon Valley was designated on July 18, 2018 as a Mental Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) in Bexar County.  Our designation type is High Needs, ID #7488333753, with a score of 12. Completing this questionnaire will assist The City of Leon Valley in obtaining federal funds towards improvements for our community as well as the state of Texas!

Please contribute to the Leon Valley community by completing this questionnaire by "April 1st, 2020" and spread the word with neighbors as well as on social media regarding the importance of completing this brief questionnaire. "In Leon Valley You Count!"

Heads Up, Garbage Service Rate Increase Coming Soon!

As we reported this past December, Tiger Sanitation's rates will increase, starting in April of 2020. The contract states the rates were to stay the same until January of 2020, and then, as with our previous waste provider, increase each year based on the CPI (consumer price index), with the increase being capped at 2.5%. The CPI did increase to 3.8%, so the increase is capped. Thank you. Due to the timing of the billing schedule, they have already processed billing for the first quarter of 2020 (January - March) and therefore the 2.5% rate adjustment will be made on the next bill cycle (April -June). The new rates are scheduled to be mailed out to residents on March 1, 2020. There are no additional adjustments needed at this time. Thank you.

Please contact Tiger Sanitation with rate increase questions at (210) 333-4287, press #2 for residential or access  https://www.tigersanitation.com/bill-pay
Thank you.

Bexar County has partnered with the City of San Antonio and the University of Texas at San Antonio to conduct a survey on the challenges that residents of Bexar County have in obtaining internet access, having digital literacy skills, or having access to internet-connected devices, more commonly known as the "Digital Divide". We are reaching out to you to include this in messaging and to alert your residents to ensure their voices are heard. This survey is open to all residents of Bexar County, and we are hoping to take the information we obtain to better address this issue moving forward.

By participating you'll be eligible for a drawing for a $25 HEB gift card!

2020 Census Poster Contest Winner!

The City of Leon Valley, in cooperation with Census 2020 and local businesses, sponsored a community poster contest opened to students from Kindergarten through High School. There were three categories in the contest: Elementary Grades K-5, Middle School Grades 6-8 and High School Grades 9-12.

The posters are a demonstration of student understanding in how the 2020 Census count impacts the federal funds that communities receive each year for programs and services that are critical for Leon Valley Police Dept., Leon Valley Fire Dept. and EMS, Park services, Community Library, Public Education etc.

Congratulations to  our WINNERS!
