Dear Crossroads Parents and Colleagues,

As a school community, we have an obligation to prepare our students for shaping a more just and equitable world. Recently, the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have underscored the importance of this vital work. As these issues are covered in the media and protests sweep through our country, Crossroads has an ethical and moral responsibility to carefully examine our school’s culture and address any form of inequality.

We are grateful for the actions of our faculty who explore issues of justice through their teaching and curricula. The recent recitation from memory of Frederick Douglass’s “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July” by our eighth grade class is an example of the way our students confront these issues head-on in age-appropriate ways. But now is a time to do more within the powerful frameworks of our Core Knowledge and Core Virtues programs. We must continue to work together toward sustaining a safe and nurturing environment for every child while creating the inclusive school we all want for our children and for future generations.

In addition to the work many of us will be involved with through our Return-to-School Task Force this summer, school leadership and members of the Board of Trustees will also convene to discuss actions Crossroads can take to do better. Inherently, this is slow and careful work that requires dialogue and thoughtful exchanges of perspectives and ideas. Through this process, we plan to develop long-term strategies that our school can commit to from this point forward.

We welcome your input in this process and will share further updates as our work begins.

Yours truly,
David Kahn
