Communion Sunday

IN-PERSON WORSHIP AND LIVE STREAMING

Belong. Believe. Be love.

In-Person Worship Service
Beginning EARLY this week: at 9:25AM, November 6

An exciting and FULL service, including: All Saints Remembrance, New Member Welcome, Communion, and Mission Blessing, our Procession and Prelude will begin at 9:25am as we prepare for the "Out of the Woods" Charity Auction after worship.

Updated in-person details:

  • To create as safe a space as possible, masking is highly recommended in the sanctuary for in-person worship.
  • If you have any symptoms that are not usual, regardless of severity, please worship from home.
  • We strongly recommend being fully vaccinated and up to date with boosters, as gathering indoors for an hour comes with risk.
  • Sanctuary doors will be closed during worship for safety.

We trust that you will prayerfully consider the best worshiping option for your household, and want to assure you that worshiping from home continues to be an option for those who choose to do so. We love you all!

India & Nepal Mission Trip Support

Dear UUMC Family and Friends,

This Thanksgiving, from November 11-November 27, 2022. I plan to go on a mission trip to India and Nepal.

We will focus our work, especially on children’s programs at the mission and a community hospital, including all kinds of disabilities, personal evangelism, and a few workshops and speaking at conferences.

A mission trip is both exciting and daunting. I’ve never been to Nepal before! Even though I’ve learned Hindi, I’m still a little nervous about trying it out with native Hindi and Nepalese speakers.

I am hoping you will commit to praying for the trip. I know with your prayers and support, God will help us all to grow through this experience and will use this trip for his glory.

I am also hoping you would consider helping me with the financial cost of the trip. The total amount of money I need to raise for my trip costs is $3,000. Anything you could help with would be dearly appreciated and utilized well.

If you send a check, please make it payable to Horizons of Hope Disability Ministry and put Sunil Kathramalla and MISSION TRIP in the memo section of your check. Thank you so much for considering my request. I look forward to telling you about how I get to see God work this Thanksgiving in India and Nepal!

I thank you in advance for your prayers and your financial support. May God bless you richly!

In Christ,

~Sunil Kathramalla

FIRST NATIONS VERSION:
AN INDIGENOUS TRANSLATION OF THE
NEW TESTAMENT

The church has received a generous donation of First Nations Version: An Indigenous Translation of the New Testament in memory of Laverna Price.

She was a long-time member of the congregation and a Navajo Indian. Her father was one of the famous Navajo Code Talkers who worked during World War II sending coded messages in the Navajo language and the enemy never broke their code.

This book is available in the Center of Warmth in the church office and is available for you to read whenever the office is open. (Mon-Thurs, from 8 am -2 pm) It will be there until Christmas when it is moved to the library shelves in the Center of Warmth. The call number is REF 225.5.

I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to review this great translation.

Try looking up a familiar verse and see if you get a new perspective. For example, here is John 3:16-17:
The Great Spirit loves this world of human beings so deeply that he gave us his Son- the only Son who fully represents him. All who trust in him and his way will not come to a bad end but will have the life of the world to come that never fades away, full of beauty and harmony. Creator did not send his Son to decide against the people of this world, but to set them free from the worthless ways of the world.

Enjoy your reading,
Linda Dressler

NOTICE!

UUMC is proud to partner with the City of Irvine, CA in providing quality waste, recycling and compost collection, and disposal services. We care about the environment and the people of California and actively support sustainability initiatives.

To assist with this endeavor we have posted signs on our trash bins situated throughout our campus to help separate organic waste, recyclables, and landfill items.

We ask that UUMC members take note of the following:

Green Container Signage: Limited to food waste, yard waste, green waste, and other organic materials.

Blue Container Signage: Allows for traditional recyclables, such as bottles, cans, and plastic, and organic waste such as paper and cardboard.

Stewardship Moment

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” ~ William Shakespeare.

As members of the University United Methodist Church, we are so fortunate to be in the midst of a congregation that actively gives of itself so generously. We often talk about “stewardship” without realizing the numbers of our church family who give of themselves so unselfishly.

Two weeks ago, our Health Ministry Team, comprised of twelve dedicated career medical professionals, aided by student nurses, administered ninety-five flu shots to members of our congregation as well as nonmembers of UUMC from the community…all at no charge.

On November 6th they will be conducting their annual blood drive. They are also currently involved in raising money for our third Automated External Defibrillator (AED) which will give complete coverage for our three most vulnerable facilities. When the new AED is in place the team will conduct classes for the congregation to learn how to operate it and perhaps save a person’s life. This would be an excellent time for you to make a donation to help offset the cost of the unit which is in excess of $2500.

Our Health Ministry started in 2014 and is made up of eleven retired nurses and one retired therapist including Barbara Albers, Nora Caffrey, Mickey Chase, Marianne Fitzpatrick, Kathy Hartman, Joy King, Sarah Koshy, Kay Lucas, Linda Mirshafiee, Margaret Napper, Tammy Rice, and Bonnie Wright. Each year they conduct numerous programs which have included, blood pressure testing, hearing testing, flu shots, CPR classes, and AES tutorials.

I am one appreciative member of our congregation who after being given a hearing test by our Health Ministry Team is now wearing hearing aids and hearing much better.

We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated and well-functioning Health Ministry in our congregation. If you haven’t already done so, the next time we are all together would be a great time to seek out members of our Health Ministry team and thank them for their efforts in trying to keep us all on our feet.

Kindest regards,

~ Ted Watkins

The Church is vital when engaged with the greater community!

The test of a local church's vitality is often measured by the question: "Who would miss us if we were no longer here?" To that extent, it is not about how we feel about the church that matters, but how others in the community experience our presence in Irvine.

Our long history with Families Forward is a perfect example of how our members have shown Christ's love to others in the community. In addition, our commitment to missions locally and globally, our upcoming charity auction, our flu shot clinic, and blood drive hosting the Southern California Children's Chorus, and the Irvine PD Interfaith Security Council, and the many ways you serve the community in love help us to be known for good things by the Irvine community.

Pastor Cathie is involved in many other community organizations, including CLUE (Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice), U2EH (United To End Homelessness, part of United Way), the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council, Clergy for Choice, and she serves on the Mayor's Faith Leaders Council.

Invited by Bishop Grant Hagiya and District Superintendant Sandy Olewine, Pastor Cathie is participating in a 15-week program this fall. The C2 Leadership Institute is an endeavor of FACE (Faith And Community Engagement), and will equip us to expand our engagement with the Irvine community. Our project will be to expand our SHINE program to reach farther into the community and shine a light on our many community partnerships as well as develop more.

A 5-2 Vision Team is being assembled to assist in this project. If you have a passion for reaching out to the broader community and want to participate in this, please let Pastor Cathie know!

UUMC MEMBERS IN ACTION
TRACKING VOLUNTEER HOURS

Being the Church is not something that just happens on Sunday mornings for about an hour, but it is a way of life. Discipleship is the journey of living not solely for self, but out of love for God and neighbor. As the many members of Christ's body, the Church, we are invited to be "all in," committing our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.

The many hours we spend in service to God at the local church and throughout the community on an individual level is impressive; yet, our collective efforts reach even farther and reflect the true vitality of our Church.

Beginning in 2022, we will be tracking volunteer hours done at church and in the community on a monthly basis. These hours will be reported to the Conference in our annual report, and we want to be able to celebrate the collective impact our church has in making the world a better place.

Prizes will be offered at our Quarterly Conferences to individuals who have submitted their hours and guess closest to the number of hours of service given in total by our UUMC members!

Allow your work to be counted collectively by filling out our tracking sheet TODAY!

(Volunteer hours at church include those in the office, counting, ushering, greeting, singing, decorating, cleaning, painting, teaching, serving on committees, calling our members, etc. Volunteers hours in the community include all those given to organizations supporting needs or helping individuals in the community.)

Click on the link below and submit it once you have filled it out. Thank you!
