September 25 , Logos kick-off!

Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,

We are pleased to announce that Dorene Chen has accepted the call to be our Interim Director of Music. Justine Koontz took a call at Memorial Episcopal Church in Baltimore. Dorene has her Masters in Music and a Master in Business Administration from Ball State University in Indiana. Her concentration, in her music degree, was piano performance and pedagogy. She teaches private piano lessons and has served several churches as an accompanist. Born in China, and a citizen of the United States, Dorene is fluent in Mandarin and English.  Dorene recently moved to the area with her husband Declan and their (almost) two year old daughter, Astrid--and apparently just in the nick of time for us. Please be sure to welcome her on Sunday.

The contracts have been signed, and it won't be long before our sanctuary and shed roofs are replaced. After the roofs, our contractor will move to replace our siding. When we did our listening sessions during our last long range planning period, the congregation was clear that we need to get the place spiffed up before we think about any expansions. Thank you for your support of our previous building funds. We have just enough reserves to take care of these two projects. Looking to the future, we invite you to generously support our Capital Funds Savings account, so we can expand the lobby and move the church offices.

The Anne Arundel Sponsoring Committee of IAF has set the launch date for our Arundel IAF group as October 4, 2018 at First Christian Community Church, 7:00 pm. Come early for music. If you would like to participate in a multi-organization choir, the rehearsals are on the evenings of September 27 and October 3.

We just added Saint Martins in the Field Episcopal Church to our group. The list of Member and Friend organizations is as follows:

  • Annapolis Friends Meeting
  • Anne Arundel County Muslim Council
  • Ark and Dove Presbyterian Church, Odenton
  • Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church
  • Asbury United Methodist Church
  • Annapolis Broadneck Baptist Church

Peace of Christ,
Verse and Prayer
Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.”

- Mark 8:27-29
Grant unto us, O God,
the fullness of thy promises;
Where we have been weak,
grant us thy strength;
Where we have been confused,
grant us thy guidance;
where we have been distraught,
grant us thy comfort;
Where we have been dead,
grant us thy life.
Apart from thee, O Lord,
we are nothing,
In and with thee, we can do all things.

Notes for you!
Greetings from the new Interim Music Director! Thank you all for the warm welcomes last Sunday; you have made the transition much easier. I am excited to start serving this Sunday. We have some beautiful music planned ahead for the choir, as well as some piano solos with a classical twist. Come and join us for some musical treats!

Dorene Chen
Interim Music Director
This Sunday's band led service will have Paul Doughty as band leader. Paul has been a great help as interim director with me. Please join us this Sunday as Paul leads us in worship. Band rehearsals are going well, and we welcome any volunteers who are interested in joining the band. We meet Tuesday evenings at 7pm. LOGOS parents' night is September 18th and the first night of LOGOS is September 25th.

God bless!

Patrick Sise
Interim Director of Contemporary Music
Shortly after my family started attending Ark and Dove in 2001, I realized that what I feel called to do at church is to help create space where we can worship God together. I have been fortunate to do this at church in a rich variety of ways. These included organizing a dedicated group of volunteers to lead services when I was Worship Elder, doing lay reading, serving communion, leading Taize and Campfire Worship services, and especially by making music with the Band that moves us all to worship. I now truly feel blessed to be able to serve as an interim leader of the Band, and look forward to meeting you in God's presence during the Band-led service at 11:00 this Sunday.

Equipping the Saints
Conflict Resolution and Forgiveness
In our daily lives, as well as in our teams and ministries at church, conflicts are inevitable – some minor, some, perhaps, not so minor. Being better equipped to deal with these conflicts in a forgiving manner is a tool each of us can use. Join us on Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:30 as Pastors Tim and Jon lead a discussion on conflict resolution and forgiveness. We will start with dinner at 6:30 followed by lessons from 7-8:30. Contact Steve Debus ( or Bruce Sanders ( for more information.

Peace and Global Witness Special Offering
Now may the Lord of peace...give you peace at all times in all ways.
 -2 Thessalonians 3:16
The Peace and Global Witness Offering connects organizations with inspiring innovative peacemakers from other faith-based organizations, so we can learn from one another. This collaboration helps develop resources, which illustrate how these faith-based organizations can become active peacemakers in our local community. It also offers access to the halls of power to lift up the needs of our sisters and brothers in Christ through our ministries. Peace is active, not passive, peace is doing, not waiting.  As we seek peace, we find strength in knowing God is always near. As we move forward as active peacemakers in the lives of families at Ark and Dove, God is near. Beyond the doors of Ark and Dove, God is near. In and beyond the limits of Anne Arundel County, God is near.  Blessed are the peacemakers!

As we work to share Christ’s peace with one another, we ask that you give generously to the Peace and Global Witness Offering . This offering will go to our Arundel IAF, to promote peace in Anne Arundel County. You may donate online or with the Peace and Global Witness envelope. Extra envelopes can be found in the chair pockets. Thank you for your support. PEACE, Cheryl Schafer, Mission Elder, (

Immigration: Listening Sessions
Were you born somewhere else in the world? Then we want to hear YOUR story? How did it come about that you came to Anne Arundel County? Why do you stay? What would have made or could now make life better for you and your family? No matter whether you came to the US long ago or more recently, no matter from which country, no matter if you are now or are not a US citizen, we want to hear about YOUR experience.

Who are we? We are Linnie Girdner, Debbie Arey, Cindy Timbie, and Carolyn Price-Gibson -- the Ark and Dove representatives on the Immigration Team of ACT (Anne Arundel Connecting Together). We invite you and/or a member of your family to come to a listening session. Listening sessions are structured conversations where we listen and learn what is meaningful and important to you as a result of your experience. Let us know if you can attend one of the following sessions, which will take no longer than one hour.

  • Sun, 9/16 at 11 am and 12pm
  • Mon, 9/17 at 6 pm
  • Wed, 9/19 at 7 pm

If none of these dates works for you, please let us know what might and we can see what can be arranged. Please RSVP to Linnie Girdner at or text/call 410-999-7892. Thanks so much for your consideration. Also, if the immigration issue is important to you, please consider becoming involved with our Arundel IAF.
