Aging Studies assistant professor receives APA award

Soomi Lee APA Award

Soomi Lee, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Aging Studies, received the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 20 Springer Early Career Achievement Award. This award honors a member of Division 20 whose work has made significant early career contributions to understanding critical issues in the psychology of adult development and aging. Division 20, titled Adult Development and Aging, focuses on the advancement of the study of psychological development, challenges, and change throughout adult life. 

APA CONA award presented to Aging Studies professor

Bill Haley, PhD, professor in the School of Aging Studies, was selected to receive the 2022 Committee on Aging (CONA) Award for the Advancement of Psychology and Aging from the American Psychological Association (APA). This award recognizes psychologists and friends of psychology who have made significant contributions to the mission of the committee. Haley was nominated by Victor Molinari, PhD, ABPP, who was the 2015 recipient of the award. Haley was presented the award at the APA Convention held last week in Minneapolis.

Jungmee Lee

CSD research associate professor presents in Seoul, South Korea


Jungmee Lee, PhD, research associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), was invited to speak at the Research Seminar of the Korean Otological Society in Seoul, South Korea. In her first presentation, which was part of the online symposium prior to the main in-person seminar, Lee discussed her research titled, "Evidence of possible contribution of cochlear mechanics to individual differences in the cocktail-party effect." During the conference in Seoul, Lee presented her research titled, "Relationship between various measures of auditory perception and otoacoustic emissions."

Jerome Galea

Social Work assistant professor receives grant to further HIV-related research


During the 2022 International AIDS Conference in Montreal, Canada, Jerome Galea, PhD, MSW, RCSWI, assistant professor in the School of Social Work, was awarded $150,000 through the Collaborative Initiative for Paediatric HIV Education and Research (CIPHER) Grant Programme. CIPHER provides a unique opportunity for early-stage investigators to address research gaps in pediatric and adolescent HIV in resource-limited settings and promote evidence-based HIV policies and programs. His project, "Development and pilot testing of an optimized conversational agent or 'chatbot' for Peruvian adolescents living with HIV to facilitate mental health screening, education, self-help, and linkage to care,” was among three CIPHER grants selected from over 100 submissions.

SRI at FMHI

FMHI hosts 2022 SRI@FMHI Scholar Research Day


The Summer Research Institute (SRI) at the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) Scholar Research Day 2022 showcased and celebrated the work of this year's cohort of undergraduate researchers. Scholar Research Day marks the end of 11 weeks of intense in-person instruction in which each scholar was matched with a faculty mentor with whom to conduct their research study. Students also participated in a variety of activities, including community field experiences, seminars, and a  workshop series, coordinated by the institute's core faculty, Kathleen Moore, PhD and Khary Rigg, PhD. The undergraduate SRI is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Sharayah Tai

ABA doctoral student speaks at WIBA Conference 


Sharayah Tai, MS, BCBA, an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) doctoral student, was invited to be a discussant and presenter at the Women in Behavior Analysis (WIBA) Conference. Tai gave an overview of procedures used in behavior analysis that have been effective in improving skill acquisition and athletic performance in athletes in the areas of health, sports, and fitness. "This was also my first time being a discussant of a symposium, and it was a great experience talking about how much ABA is growing in areas outside of autism, specifically in the sports world," Tai said. "I enjoy being able to talk about my passions (ABA and sports) and helping others learn how to get more involved in ABA within health, sports, and fitness." Read more.
