USF weather update


USF continues to closely monitor Hurricane Ian and its impact on the Tampa Bay region. All USF classes have been canceled starting on Monday, Sept. 26, through Thursday, Sept. 29. All campuses will begin closing Tuesday, Sept. 27. Specific details about building closure times will be communicated today. For additional updates, see the university's announcement here.

Trina D. Spencer speaks in Chile

CFS associate professor inspires students, university administration, leaders in education in Chile


As the international committee member on a student's dissertation committee, Trina D. Spencer, PhD, BCBA-D, associate professor in the Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS), traveled to Chile to share her research findings and provide consultation to university leaders. Spencer does work with an innovative educational model called multi-tiered system of language instruction and conducts clinical practice research – specifically implementation research. She served as the primary speaker at two seminars, discussing multi-tiered systems of support and the concept of implementation science. Her presentation inspired Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile administration members to consider some of the recommendations she offered and recognize the drivers and barriers to researchers making strong clinical impact. Aging Studies kicks off new academic year with Welcome Back Reception


The School of Aging Studies held its Welcome Back Reception to kick off the 2022-2023 academic year. Riaan van Zyl, PhD; Bill Haley, PhD; and Howard Goldstein, PhD highlighted some of the accomplishments of the school's faculty over the past year, including several prestigious awards and continued grant funding from national and federal organizations. PhD students' achievements, including awards, scholarships, and completed dissertations, were also recognized. Watch the video.

CJMHSA TAC Team

CJMHSA TAC and Florida's 12th Judicial Circuit hold SIM event


The Criminal Justice, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Technical Assistance Center (CJMHSA TAC) conducted its first-ever circuit-wide Sequential Intercept Mapping (SIM) event. SIM utilizes the Sequential Intercept Model as a process for systems planning to divert individuals with mental illness and substance use disorders from justice system involvement.


The center worked alongside community partners in Florida’s 12th Judicial Circuit, comprised of Sarasota, Manatee, and Desoto counties, to conduct the mapping. The group identified key priorities for each county and initiatives that will ultimately improve systems for youth with mental health or substance use challenges who are at risk of or already experiencing juvenile justice system involvement. USF chapter of the National Stuttering Association

USF's chapter of National Stuttering Association celebrates 15 years


The USF chapter of the National Stuttering Association has made contact with hundreds of local adults who stutter and continues to grow on-campus since its first support meeting held Sept. 19, 2007. Co-hosted by Nathan Maxfield, PhD, CCC-SLP, associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the group meets the third Wednesday of each month in the USF Speech-Language Clinic and aims to help group members develop a fresh perspective on stuttering. Read more.

On Saturday, October 22, 2022, the Tampa Midtown Rotary Club will host its 11th Annual Cycling for Autism to support programs at USF focused on helping individuals with autism and their families. The event, supporting the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities at USF and the USF Applied Behavior Analysis Program, will be held at the Courtney Campbell Causeway Trail, with food and festivities afterward at Whiskey Joe’s Restaurant. Retired USF Nursing Professor Dr. Nick Hall, who has completed four cross-country bicycle trips to raise funds for Rotary International’s efforts to end polio, will serve as the Grand Marshal.
