CBCS students present research in three-day, university-wide conference | |
As nearly 600 undergraduate students across the Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee campuses showcased their work at the OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference, CBCS students were sure to make their mark. Graduate students also participated at the Sarasota-Manatee campus' conference, and MSW student Emily Stevens won the Best in Social Sciences award alongside biomedical sciences student Sakshi Wagh (pictured).

Students experience Florida's unforgiving heat in model prison cell
According to Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Ricky Dixon, 75% of prisons in Florida don't have air conditioning. As part of her Prison Experience and Reentry course, which provides students with a first-hand look at the incarceration experience and reentry process, Department of Criminology Assistant Professor of Instruction Colby Valentine, PhD, worked with The Florida Cares Charity to bring the organization's model prison cell to the USF Tampa campus. In an interactive exhibit called “Beat The Heat,” students could spend three minutes inside the cell to experience what Florida inmates feel during the hot summer months. Read more.

Students get inside look into future careers during social work job fair
Eighty students, including many Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work students, attended the School of Social Work job fair earlier this month. The job fair provided an opportunity for students to meet with the 50 professionals from 28 community agencies that were represented.
Professionals from several agencies noted that students were well-prepared, intelligent, and "ready to be hired." Assistant Instructor Akanke Omorayo-Adenrele, MSW, Academic Program Specialist Valentina Arcila, and the school's academic support team and field department organized the event.

Conference highlights cybercrime research at USF Sarasota-Manatee
An international training conference on cyberfraud at the Sarasota-Manatee campus highlighted the university’s expanding role in preparing students and others to meet growing cybersecurity challenges and threats. C. Jordan Howell, PhD, an assistant professor of criminology, and Kaylee Eckelman, Sarasota Cybersecurity’s lab manager, presented their research on computer hackers, their motivations, and what it might take for them to use their skills in a more positive way. Social work faculty and students honored at USF Lavender Ceremony
David Kilmnick, PhD, an assistant professor of instruction of social work, received an award for "Outstanding Faculty Contribution to LGBTQ Life at USF" at the USF Lavender Ceremony. Two Master of Social Work students were also recognized at the event. The Lavender Ceremony is an opportunity for LGBTQ+ students at the university to participate in a graduation ceremony that celebrates their community. LGBTQ+ students and allies were acknowledged for their achievements and contributions to USF. Read more.

Student employees awarded for commitment and contributions to CBCS
Two students were selected to receive the CBCS Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) Awards. Hanna Hirano won the Undergraduate SEOTY Award, and Katelyn Smith received the Graduate SEOTY Award. Hirano was applauded for her punctuality and preparedness, and Smith was recognized for her reliability and dedication. Read more.

CBCS faculty and staff reflect on the 2023-24 academic year
Last Friday, college faculty and staff gathered in the MHC Atrium and online for the Spring 2024 CBCS Faculty and Staff Assembly. Presentations were given by various leaders in CBCS, and faculty, staff, and students received awards for their dedication to the success of the college and its students. A special anniversary presentation was given by Kathleen Moore, PhD, about the Florida Mental Health Institute and its 50-year history. Read more and watch the assembly here.
